Thanks for giving us a taste of the car hobby in France, and some of the American cars collected there. Quite a assortment. Were most of these cars purchased in the States and imported to France by their owners or were thay purchased and driven in France as "new" cars. Are collector cars taxed on the same basis as new cars, i.e. larger displacement engine size taxed very heavily. Or are taxed in a special category as "collector" cars?

Thanks for taking the time show us the pictures!

Your welcome :)

Most of the cars were imported as used cars from the USA. We pay an importation tax and WAT (around 30% of the price of the car plus shipping for the two taxes). After that, we have to go through a technical control for homologation and we get french registration. After that, no more taxes at all :)
Insurance for collection cars is very cheap so most of my friends have two or more cars. I've got 4 cars myself and each costs me around 100$ per year.

How much would it cost just for shipping alone?.

What other cars do you have? I'm glad to hear that things are more amenable to car collecting in France. I remember back in the early 1970's when I spent time living in Paris, one could by a Rolls and or Bentleys from the sixties really cheap because nobody wanted to pay the taxes on relatively large displacement cars in France. The fact that suffered alot of rust damage didn't help either.

I have always been partial to the Citroen SM, a car I had always hope to own but never got around to buying. I was also interested in the CX, but these were never imported to the US. A neighbor of mine in Los Angeles had a CX Pallas which he brought in as a "grey market" car and had to have it modified for American regulations. My wife had a new Peugeot 505S in thearly '80s which was a very nice car. A little under powered for the US, but in the early 1980's everything was under powered. The electrics were the Achilles heal of the Peugeot and led to its' only two year stay in our garage.

Since 1999, the are no more "year tax" called Vignette in france. So we can have big engines without being ruined by our politicians :D

For the moment (without the cadillac I bought that is not at home yet) I've got the grey corvette on the first picture, a Jaguar XJ6 for my wife :

and a Renault 19 with mediacar.

I had got a CitroŽn CX too. It was a Gti Turbo, very rare with low milaga. I sold her to buy the Jag :

:)I would have kept the Citroen. I love those cars, anything from the 2CV-up. Love the cockroach styling of the Id cars.:D . Post up some more pics of the CX, especially interior shots. That really was a cool car!

That dude must own the '54 chevy pickup with the "keep it flying" sticker on the windshield. He looks like he could be from Mississippi or 'bama. As long as he kept his mouth shut, (where their favorite word is, UUUHH) he'd fit right in.

Thanks for sharing the photos, Choucroute.

Always nice to see some American car enthusiasts in Europe. As much as our classic cars stand out on the road here, I imagine they're real attention- grabbers over there. Thanks for the pics.

I know Louis Chevrolet was of French descent (Chevrolet has long used the fleur de lis on emblems for the Corvette and Caprice; my '64 Impala has them in the wide Chevrolet emblems on the hood and trunk) and I believe the namesake for Cadillac was as well.

Cadillac was the foundator of Detroit and he was french, near Bordeaux :)
Louis Chevrolet was born 200 miles from my location.:)

I still like the fleur de lis as part of Chevrolet's emblems though.

I guess that one beer left with the cap on it will be breakfast, at least he planned ahead.

Yeah, the R8 can only run a 13.0 in the 1/4, but in the words of the part of me that's a 16 year old from Chicago, "Its got major swag." :histeric:
