hello, i am pretty handy with these motors and stuff, but i have a small question for you because im stumped...i have been trying to have a chip burned for my 91' seville w/4.9 from superchip, i waited a week, then called the local vendor to see what the hold up was, and the vendor told me that some of the ecm codes on these models cannot support a chip (superchip told them this). but some can, they just have to have another code from another ecm (the 4 letter code on the box). so, being that you know a lot about these cars and their components, i wonder if you could give a possible reason for the problem, thanks in advance, illuminaP.

Not sure.

The auto companies do not give the info as to what is in the calibration chips to companies like Superchip so whatever they have is either pirated or reverse engineered. Possibly they figured out what is in some of the calibration locations for a certain calibration that is identified by a part number. There may be other calibrations for a variety of reasons (Federal emissions vs. California emissions, for instance) and maybe they only figured out one of them.

you may be right about the emmisions, i live in ohio, and i know the car was originally from dayton ohio, where they have stricter emmisions standards, and to my knowlege, they have had them for some time. not sure if this has anything to do with it, but it might, as i have stated before, the car was brand-new from dayton. thanks for the reply, and i will find a chip for this thing:devil:.illuminaP.

Also, Superchips may have a chip that works for several different years of cars. Sometimes the computer software code in the box is carried over for several years with no change....but the calibration itself may change every year. They may want to know which part number box you have to know if they have "developed" a calibration for that specific software.

Why don't you just bump your timing up 3 or 4 degrees at the distributor with a timing light, run premium and save the money for the chip?? HP does not come in chips..... If the engine is stock otherwise all they are going to do with that particular engine is to add some spark in the chip, charge you a lot of money and tell you you have to run premium. Change the spark with a timing light by adjusting the distributor reference setting, get the same results and save money.

bbob, check his homepage out if you get a chance. look at his current mods to his 4.9 and please tell if there would be ANYTHING to be gained, or lost with a chip. Thanks

already have done that, im more interested in the shift change and the throttle changes they claim to make as well as fuel mapping and whatnot. if it does not work, oh well (please send pint of jack danials via e-mail:D).
