MauiV neglected to mention that most people in other car forums are far more confrontational and opinionated than in here, with exceptions, of course :sneaky:

Because I've had 7 Imperials in my life, I am also from time-to-time
over on the Imperial board. Sometimes truth is funnier than fiction. T
he longest enduring question is:

"How can I get people to STOP calling my car a Chrysler?"

I mean the MSO says "IMPERIAL" - no place on the car does
the name "CHRYSLER" appear, and the VIN if put into a
computer comes up "IMPERIAL" and 80% of the parts
are specific to the Imperial....and still they call it a Chrysler!

Another guy got pulled over by a cop as over the police radio
was a call regarding a white male, in his 40s who had robbed
a convenience store and was seen driving away in a
"Black Chrysler" ~ Guess who got pulled over? Ya, the
guy on the board with a black Imperial.

Curious......I had always thought that the Imperial model lines were built by Chrysler Motor Company. Even most of Google thinks so. To claim that an Imperial is not a full-blooded Chrysler is heresy !......especially some of those gorgeous finned tanks of the 50's and 60's.

Carrying the badging thing to ad absurdium, my 2002 vehicle has not one Cadillac script badge anywhere, it is badged as an STS, therefore not a Cadillac ? Most of the parts won't fit a Deville or Escalade, either. How quaint.

Look at it from the marque perspective: The name "Imperial" is and was so tied to "Chrysler" (the real Chrysler) that separate badging was unnecessary - just as in many Cadillac models through the years.

As has been said "You can fool some of the people some of the time. You can fool most of the people most of the time. But you can't fool all the people all of the time."

But, the point is that people do not call it a "General Motors Cadillac" nor a Ford Motor Company Lincoln, nor a Chrysler Jeep Liberty.

Yes, of course, the Imperial WAS indeed a product of the Chrysler Corporation, as was the Plymouth and is the Dodge, but, you do not hear people calling it a "Chrysler Dodge" nor a Chrysler Plymouth ~

On the MSO (Manufacturer's Statement of Origin) under MAKE, it says Imperial and under model either LeBaron or Crown (the models). Nowhere on the Title nor even the registration, nor the insurance papers does the name "Chrysler" appear. Likewise from 1957 thru 1993, did the nameplate of CHRYSLER ever appear. on an Imperial. I had enough of them to know. (and) the ones I did not own, my parents owned. I am certainly not denying that it was made by Chrysler, but, like Dodge, Chrysler & Plymouth and years prior, DeSoto, Imperial was a seperate make, and NOT a model of the Chrysler car.

Very funny thread.

'Imperial' is the brand name. We don't call it a Toyota Lexus LS460.

And might as well add: Northstar Forum - "Head gasket issues; anyone interested in a class action lawsuit?"

Well, truth be told, I think we old guys are probably the quilty parties here. Even though I know better, I still refer to the Chrysler product known as "Imperial" as a Chrysler Imperial. Why? Guess it's hangover from the days when Imperial was the name for a high line Chrysler model ........ like a Buick Electa 225 or a Olds 98. Gosh, some of us even call Lincoln's topmodel of yore a Lincoln Continental. I know that at diffeent points in time that both Ford and Chrysler tried make a separatedivision out their corporate flagship models, but didn't succeed in separating them from a lesser brand in the publics mind. Could it be that they were sold by Chrysler-Plymouth and Lincoln-Mercury dealerships! And to be honest nobody gave a damn what they were called.

I think orconn's probably correct in his assessment of hanging a name on a company line........an acquaintance of ours, a real dear of a person (but somewhat daffy), will always announce her impending trip or drive with an officious "I'm taking The Grand Marquis...." .

Chrysler Motor Company made differing models of Chryslers, Dodges, Plymouths, DeSotos, tanks, Lord knows what. General Motors makes differing models of GMC, Cadillac, Pontiac, Chevrolet, Buick, (Oldsmobile ?) Humvees, and Lord knows what. Ford Motor Company makes..........
and on and on......... and our motor companies also partially designed and assembled acquired automotive stuff like Jaguar, SAAB, Opel, Jeep, and a slew of others. It's sort of affected to divorce a model line from the parent company.

I tend to call cars I like by model name. Now, if it doesn't get me where I want to go reliably, then it usually gets called a "mother f--ing rust bucket" or something similar depending on how much I am in the hole for a repair or tow bill.
