id like to share a story with you that took place this morning about 8am. the problem has since been solved but i feel like sharing this cuz it was great.

i pull out of my driveway, and all is well cuz my new exhaust sounds great. put the lac in gear, and drive off. as i go to put my seat belt on i take my foot off the pedal and coast, however my car had other plans. im pretty sure my throttle linkage was stuck cuz my car was racing at wide open throttle.

at first i just hit the brakes a bit, i could only tame it to about 35mph. then i thought well maybe its the cruise control, played with that for a quick second or two but nothing. so i did the sensible thing and shifted to neutral, the engine raced up so fast and it was so loud that it scared the life out of me. so i put it back in gear and she took off on me again.

i blew two stop signs and made a right turn and left turn out of side streets onto main routes without stopping. i traveled a good 4-5 miles this way, then realized how bad traffic is near where i work. i dropped down to neutral and hit the e brake (which had done nothing 2 minutes prior) and made my way to the side of the road.

i shut the car off and sat for 5 minutes to catch my breath and control my laughter (this was scary, yet fun). started her back up, she raced high again. so i turned the key to the on position and started playing with the pedals a little. in doing so i think it finally got the throttle linkage back into action. i made it to work safely.

this was interesting though, cuz ive never been able to get my car to accelerate as fast as it did this morning...and i was riding the brake!

so thats my story, hope you enjoyed. sorry if you read it all and were let down.

Where can I get one? Talk about easy driving, put it in gear and go, dont even have to set the cruise!

why the hell didn't you just shut off the engine in the first place :hmm:

My thoughts exactly...

....."so i did the sensible thing and shifted to neutral, the engine raced up so fast and it was so loud that it scared the life out of me. so i put it back in gear and she took off on me again"

thats sensible?

You drove 4-5 miles at WOT? How fast were you going by that time?
You then dropped to neutral (again!) :hmm: And use the e-brake to stop... what's wrong with your normal brakes? Burn them off driving for 5 miles with them on trying to slow down?

lol weird that this thread came back to the top after this long.

first of all, of course everyone is going to give me crap about why i didnt just put it in neutral and shut it off. i can only say that when something like this happens you cant exactly think straight.

and no, using the brakes, or e brake for that matter would not stop the car.

dont talk to me like im an idiot, i didnt appreciate that very much.

eh.... something similar happened to me in my Oldsmobile... for some reason, when it is really cold, the gas pedal likes to stick, so I would accelerate out of my driveway, onto the road, thenwhen I took my foot off the gas.... it kept going, at firstit kinda startled me, and my first thought was to hit the brakes, but that would only be fighting the engine, so I bumped it up into neutral, engine raced up, I simpley turned it off (not to the lock position... then you have no steering) and pulled into a small parking lot for a warehouse on the side of the road.... no p/s but it is not needed, and my parking brake dosn't work, but I still had 2-3 pumps on the normal brake, and even with out power brake, it isn't that bad to slow down... I poped the hood and the throttle linkage was stuck, so I moved it by hand to free it up, and it was good to go....

... even in the '93 DeVille I have experamented with shutting the engine off at different times (on roads that not many people use... I live out in the country) and even around turns and what not, the best thing would be to just hit it in neutral ad shut it down.... if you leave it in neutral it'll keep bnouncing off the rev limiter.... not very good for the engine....

I don't know what else to say though.... you seem to know what you did, and what you should have done.... but just think what would have happened if a little kid was to ride their bike out into the street while on the little joy ride?

well then i'd say that kid picked the wrong time to ride his bike... playin

chuck, i would've done the same thing bro. aparently not many people on here freeze up or can't think clearly when in a panic... i do!

nightwolf, i had pretty much the same reaction to my problem as you did. i thought the pedal stuck to i played with that first. then i though my cruise went off so i played with that. and then when i went to neutral it raced in a split second, and this was like the first week i had my new exhaust...so of course the noise scared the crap out of me (8am i had been awake all but 20 minutes). if you had heard this thing roaring trust me you would be frightened also, lacseville knows where im coming from on that one. what i did wrong was try to diagnose the problem while driving.

as far as the bike rider kid is concerned. kids dont ride their bike at 8am. this is the laziest town ever, nobody is out til atleast to.

but hey im alive arent i?

Sorry Chuck, I understand how sometimes things just screw up on ya, and when you've just woke up to top it off. I have seen many made up storys from people trying to get a rise out of others (not here) and didn't know if this was one too.

And to show I'm sincere, I'll share a stupid story of my own...

My old Fifth Ave had got rear-ended and hit in the front left side within 2 weeks time (both not my fault). It seemed this car was invisible :helpless:

Well, the bodyman, who I thought I was good friends with, had cashed the insuranse check and not done any work :annoyed:

So I started fixing it myself, in the lot behind his shop (I worked in another business in the same building)

Well one day, I had removed the rear brake line from the proportioning valve to fix a leak in the line, and went about doing some other stuff. When I hade had enough for the day I went to put the car back in it's stall. I figured I'd still have my front brakes, and I did for a couple of stops, until the shaft in the proportioning valve blew out the back where the rear line was supposed to be! Well as luck would have it, I was driving right towards the bodyman's van, and here comes the stupid part, when I heard the thunk of the shaft flying out and having no brakes, I thought I'd throw it in park...

That probibly would have worked, but after crushing his MPV when you looked inside my car, it was in 1st, not park... opps!

We called it even after that, I still wish it had been on purpose kinda.

lol yes my story is the honest to god truth, every last word of it.
that was a rather silly story in regards to your 5th ave. a friend of mine had his dodge shadow roll across a lot into another car during school once cuz he left it in drive...the next day his car caught on fire. talk about bad karma. i almost bought a fifth ave. a couple years ago but it had an awful sounding tranny. i would have enjoyed the rear wheel drive though...especially during boston winters :lildevil:
