View Full Version : '92 Eldorado Seats, question EldoBlues 06-26-04, 08:31 PM I've had this Eldo, and the front passenger seat, non-electric recliner seat back would not stay in any locked position. (the 6-way electric switch works fine on both front seats) Now the drivers side, recliner back is not working also. Can anyone tell me, what model year (s), of the Eldo's '92 thru '99, seats will fit, and/or be compatable with the '92.
The Owners manual, stated these seats, have a air-craft type fluid damper recliner hinges. I tried to find a service report or recall/fix notice, on this to no avail. Is there a fix for this? Or if you've had the same problem, what did you do? What would be the approximate cost of new and or used hinges? And with what part number/s ?
Thanks! :banghead: bbozsik 06-28-04, 12:35 PM Do you mean that the seat backs can be moved foward without pulling up on the releasing tab, but the seat itself can still hold a person normally? Or that the seat itself slides around as if on casters, creating the feeling of being in Six Flags on a hot summer day? EldoBlues 06-29-04, 11:34 AM Thanks, bbozsik
Yes to the first part of your anwser.
The seat bottoms, (six-way position on both front seats works fine) it's the recline lever, that is not working, as for the seat-back tilt forward lever, I can't determine if they work, if the seats won't hold in any recline position, for the back to tilt forward, to allow access to the rear seat. Both tilt forward levers are spring loaded, to pull into a locked position, and should release each seat back from any reclined position, I assume. (Is that true?)
Both seat backs are not staying in any upright locked position, period! And before I rip them out and trash them, for bucket seats that work, or weld them solid in a comfortable position. I'm asking for assistance here, my thinking being, that I could not be the only '92 Eldorado owner with this seat problem............or could I ? :banghead:
Taking my Eldo, to the local Caddy dealer is my last resort, money-wise. If I can fix them (seats) myself, instead of an auto upholstery shop, that will want half the cost, that the dealer would want. I think we all like to fix our own cars, if we are able too. Still seeking a fix for recliner seats! :drinker EldoBlues 07-06-04, 06:34 PM Thanks, bbozsik

Also would like to know, what other model year Eldorado seats, will fit in the '92 model year floor-pan. With either the manual or electric recline seats?
Thanks again!
EldoBlues bob2231 07-06-04, 09:41 PM The lever on the side of the seat remotely operates a small cylinder that runs down the side of the seat base. Actually, there may be 1 on each side of each seat. They look a lot like your hood supports. They're called recliner support gas tubes. Since you have to remove the seats to if you buy replacement seats, why noy just remove them and replace the tubes ? The price for nice seats, even at a junk yard, is outrageous. You have another option also that's almost free. Take out the seats, remove the side cover plate from the seat base, get the seat back in the position you want and measure the length of the exposed rod that slides into the cyl. If you put a piece of solid tubing that length around that rod, you'll be able to pull the seat back forward but it won't recline any further than that. EldoBlues 07-19-04, 12:54 PM Thanks ! bob2231,
Anyone with more info on this please respond ! sprucegoose 07-19-04, 01:50 PM Wow, I have a 93 Eldo, and I assumed the seats where pretty much identical just by looks... I guess they aren't as I had mine out and was repairing the sagging cushion just recently, and there is a big difference in the recline feature.
First, mine has a separate vertical padle shaped switch to operate the electric powered reclining of the seats. There are two threaded rods which are connected to these small drive motors on each side of the seat. When you operate the switch, they push or pull those screws and tilt the seat back. Mine have always operated fine, but the acme threads were looking pretty dry, so I lubricated them with lithium grease before re-assembling them.
As far as interchangability, the best way to find that out would be to contact a dealer or salvage yard as they should have a complete list of interchangably years. I know mine sure look identical to another 92 and 94 I looked at, but not sure about the mounting brakets underneath, etc. Good luck! :) MSUC5Vette 08-14-04, 07:52 PM The lever on the side of the seat remotely operates a small cylinder that runs down the side of the seat base. Did you find a solution? I am having the same problem with my drivers seat in my '85 Deville. I would love to fix it! | |
