Hey guys/gals,
I was wondering if it would mess up anything in the computer if I were to cut a section of my exhaust pipe off in front of the muffler and use clamps to put it on when I need it. I just want the car to sound really loud for cruising around. But I could clamp the piece back on when I needed it. I bet that it would sound wicked :lildevil:.
Thanks

Don't think so, but if you install a solenoid system, you can choose when it's on and off from inside of the car... someone on this forum did something like that, I think... Don't remember who, though.

no problems in doing that. all oxygen sensors are before the cat. you could cut it off before the cat (:want: rooooaaaarrrr :want:) either way, it'll sound awesome!

Or you could just buy some new exhaust that would sound really good!

Oh I know it would never sound like a NASCAR...but still. I have a VW flatfour in my dunebuggy and it is open. Dude it sounds as good as some V-8s. It's a super loud, deep mellow tone. Like a ricer on steroids lol. I know I'm gonna get dogged for saying that but hey :worship:. I'm still thinking of a way to do it to my Seville. Any ideas are welcome.

the only problem with running straight pipes is gas mileage and attention both good and bad i have a 94 etc and with 10.3:1 c/r its ****ing loud. i love it but going from 18mpg to 13 is kinda disappointing except the sound is great.

all i do is unbolt my cat 2 bolts and five minutes and im having fun sound time.

Wow... Big Red gets 13 MPG normally... that'd be... 8 MPG? *Shudders*

What?! How do you get worse MPG by going to open exhaust? If anything I thought that it should improve. With nothing blocking the way.

I've heard of getting less mpg from going to a louder exhaust. I've experienced a drop in power from going to a louder exhaust (in a fuel injected truck).

It's actually mostly due to riding the engine a bit more hard because it sounds so cool now, it's not any physical problem, just a more excited driver.

Thats true about running the engine harder with open exhaust. I had a Ford Explorer 4x4 with the 4.0L V-6. Normaly I would just drive it normal. But after I had the exhaust cut off I was always revving the engine and peeling out. The reason I want a open exhaust that I can close pretty easy is because it'll ring your head till it hurts. I had to drive to Kansas City once in that Explorer.....and 80mph at 2,500 RPM will give you a headache when you listen to it for 6 hrs round trip :bonkers: . So thats the only downfall I can see.

Well guys. Today I got the guts to "play" with my exhaust a little. I took a drill and drilled pretty good size holes all the way around the pipe about 3ft in front of the muffler. It sounds pretty good. At idle it sounds deeper and about 3x as loud. Then when you step on it it sounds real nice.:bouncy: Not as nice as I think that open pipes might. I might just go with glasspacks instead so I don't have to worry about passing a cop.

well you get worse gas mileage because one yourev it more and since the cat is off there is no back pressure( or alot less) then there normally is to the valves dont close as rapidly and thats another reason for gas cunsumption, b/c when i disconnect my cat the mpg gauge goes from about 17-13 in a matter of seconds without revving it

Has anyone ever thought that opening the exhaust UNDER the car like that would allow fumes INTO the car when stopped or driving slowly?

The exhaust needs to be routed out behind the car.

And here I was thinking I was just high from driving a Cadillac :hmm:

thers fumes but if you keep moving your good, and even if you do sit around like at a stop light the gases dont come inside to readily

yeah what i did on my 91 eldo was cut off the cat because it was broken and rattling to the point of insanity, so i put a mid pipe in place of the cat and i already had my edelbrock muffler on it and it sounded good before the cat was taken off,but after the cat was removed i noticed that when i floored it the car sounded the same but at high rpms the car was more aggersive sounding then before with just the dual exhuast muffler, also i had a problem one day when i went to start it in the afternoon and the car backfired and stalled,it wasn't really just a backfire noise it was more like a gun going off,i scared people at work when it happened.funny but not good,oh almost forgot the smell of not having a cat was horrible when i came to a stop.it smelled inside my car like it was coming through the floor.

Do you have to cut the exhaust pipes, or can you unscrew somethign so that it can be put back on...

i have a 98 sts.... wouldnt mind tryin that out haha

well if its anything like the eldo (which it prolly is) there is one pipe connected to the cat held on with 2 bolts just undo those with a 15mm and movve the latter half of the exhuast to the side and viola its done
