Car is about 2 hrs from home and they will not tow it back here to the dealer as the tow truck driver as well as the shop it was taken to believes its done for....
I say its totaled and it should be cuz it will never look or ride right
Thankfully everyone is okay, my dad was taking my sister to a college interview and hit black ice went all around and hit the guard rail...
What do you guys think, 32k miles RIP?

Well it is good everyone is alright. A car can be replaced.
Looks like the air bags deployed so it may be close.

Sorry to hear about that Jason, this time of the year sucks for driving. Sad to see the damage done to the car, but as long as your dad and sister are OK, that's all that really matters. Based upon the damage visible from the picture, I'd say it's probably gonna be totaled, but I'm no expert in the field.

Just out of curiosity, was that the stock grille or did you add that in? It looks nice.

E&G classics Cadillac Sixteen inspired grille
bought it for him last xmas to match the V better
cost me 500
this xmas i bought him a woodgrain shifter for it, along with woodgrain panels to match the whole thing

Well not necessarily. What if it gets totaled and he replaces it with another '05 STS?

I feel your pain though. Remember this?

gotta be a V8 and have either a dark inside or out
i think if it was a posi rear hed be better off, that was a standard base V8 ie open wheel diff
posi would handle better

I~LUV~Caddys8792

Did they offer positraction with the RWD cars as an option, or was it you get either:

a) RWD with open rear wheel differential

-or-

b) AWD.

That's the spirit though! The good thing about totaling out a car is it's a chance to go car shopping again!

EDIT:
I just grabbed my '05 STS brochure and it says that the STS V6 Luxury Performance and STS V8 Luxury Performance Package comes with the Limited Slip Differential.

EDIT EDIT:

I ran the VIN number on that '08 you posted and it was a rental car, and it has the 2.73:1 rear end. It does not say whether or not it's the LSD.
And here is how the model is posted: 6DC29 -2008 STS V8 LUXURY SPORTS SEDAN . I don't think it has the luxury performance package, and that's necessary for the LSD rear end.

Jason, that one does have the 3.23:1 rear end, and it is Positraction.

Sorry to hear about the accident ... tough time of year to deal with this nonsense.

Best suggestion you could offer up to your father would be that he puts 4 Blizzak's or Michelin Ice on his next car.
They are amazing, very sticky compound. Could make that "nth" degree of difference when your car breaks traction on black ice.
The cost of the tires and narrower steelies is far cheaper than 1 insurance deductable and the associated aggravation.

Every person I've met who has driven with winter tire compounds would never go back to all season's or M&S tires.

Damn that sucks. Glad to hear he's ok though. I've heard the RWD STS is scary bad in the snow though, might want to look for an AWD. Shouldn't be too hard to find one under $30k as these things aren't known for great resale.

Bummer..........Glad they're OK.......looks like that car kissed the rail at a pretty good speed.

Blizzaks, Michelins, Positraction, AWD, ABS, studs, speed, idle......none of it makes one whit of difference on black ice.
That's one condition for which no one has invented the slightest form of control over. (Except get off the road or stay home).
I'll bet that car tried its best to stay on the road. NOTHING works on black ice.

I don't know. When I hit that damned dear last year they fixed it. Hood, fender, door skin, mirror, and grill, and mine was 4 yrs old. This is only 3 yrs old, though there is an additional fender and air bags involved. Really depends on the value of the car. I wouldn't write it off just yet.

Successfully negotiating your way from point A to point B over black ice is more a matter of luck than management. If your own stupidity doesn't get you somebody else's will. At least if you're going slow you don't hit as hard.

yup dad agrees,
was going about 50 mph went across the bridge and instantly without so much as a time to react it went into the guard rail on the right side swung around and coasted across the road into the fast lane
hes been driving 35+ years and never had a ticket or an accident that was his fault (a lady rear ended him and totaled his Lincoln Mark)

on that note ins co called and based on what the shop has told them the car should be a done, they are sending an adjuster out to officially call it
heres what hell be replacing it with

Jason, that seems quite a bit high. My dealer had a 1SG model going for $25k with similar mileage not too long ago. I did find this though:

Sorry about the car Jason. Its toast though. I see fluids in front of the car at the accident scene and the radiator has been pushed back into something on the cell phone pic. My '95 had very little visible damage when it got hit but it would have cost nearly $5k to fix and it turned out to be mostly body panels and paint work.

We got into a pretty bad accident when I was about 8 when we hit a patch of black ice. We were in our full size van heading up to the Upper Peninsula for our skiing trip and my mom was driving with the cruise on. We hit a patch of ice and the van decided to floor itself to keep up the speed and away we went. We wound up spinning sideways into the ditch and coming to a stop in 3-4 feet of snow about 15 feet from the road and only a few feet from a considerable drop off behind us. I was sleeping in the back on the bed and woke up wedged in the corner. It ripped both running boards off the van but otherwise it was fine.

Chad, I always wondered why you had to rebuild the front of your DeVille...

There are oodles of current gen STS's to be had everywhere, albeit mostly V6 cars, but really in every iteration a person could want.

I'd go for the newest, most loaded V8 you can find--again, shouldn't be hard--and even if you guys prefer your one home dealer, they should have no problem picking up exactly the right one for you in little time. Sucks when this happens, but it's a perfect time to upgrade further with another new CPO bargain that's newer and with more stuff--don't settle.

ryannel2003
01-01-09, 10:33 PM
My boss has been constantly picking up '08 STS V8 fully loaded only missing the sport package in the high $20k's and low $30k's at auction with 11k miles. I'm sure you could get the dealer to secure you an auction car and get it certified. That's exactly what I'm doing once I'm done with my 2000 STS.

CadillacSTS42005
01-04-09, 04:26 PM
he wont settle for less than the sport package
he wants posi or awd now
