View Full Version : Well, it cranked but... LacSeville 06-25-04, 08:28 PM I hope everybody hasn't gone out for the evening! I got to crank my new motor for the first time tonight!! I was soooo happy that it turned over, however it did not fire up. I heard sporatic thumps from the exhaust that made me think that it wanted to. a little help here please guys... i'm thinking maybe timing??? The tps is set at @ 11.5 with the engine off, acc on, if that matters? illumina 06-25-04, 09:30 PM I hope everybody hasn't gone out for the evening! dont worry,me and my lady (ex) arent talking right now, so i have a little spare time to kill:crying:. i think you should look at timing first...and check the usual wiring and stuff. the tps should be around 7.5 or so, maybe a little less, as mine is at 7.0, with a throttle sensor cheater thingy(ill check again to make sure). also, make sure your fuel pump circut is in working order and so on, hope this all helps. LacSeville 06-25-04, 10:18 PM sorry bout the lady troubles... mine's in alaska for a week. i'd like to be cruising though!
the fuel rail is getting plenty of pressure. i even poured some gas down the throttle body. nothing. um, i need to figure out how to see if i'm getting any spark. where's the best place to start? i'll go read my shop manual and see about the tps. wouldn't think it'd keep to car from firing up though.
ive heard about the casper, but i got seriously about looking at one. it correct any dips and makes everything over 70% throttle, like full throttle with max fuel enrichment. bet that little things a lotta fun. lets see, your chip should be in soon.... :coolgleam illumina 06-25-04, 10:47 PM sorry bout the lady troubles... mine's in alaska for a week. i'd like to be cruising though!

yup:D...the thing i can suggest for finding spark is somewhat dangerous!!! it will involve a screwdriver, safety glasses, and some safety. (watch the calls coming in saying im crazy!),anyways, have an assistant handy, take the driver, put into the end of a detached-from-the-plug end plug wire, and ground the wire by putting it onto a peice of metal inside the engine compartment(metal, not alluminum).DO NOT TOUCH ANY METAL!!! have the assistant crank(bump it, not completely crank it!) the motor, observe the end of the wire for spark, if there is any spark, you will see it...im sure there is a fancy way of doing this that does not involve screwdrivers(mucho dinero!!!), but i have re-built plenty of engines using plenty of these methods, so be careful and good luck.illuminaP. btw, the danger is geting a little shocked, but if you do, you know you have spark...:D:lildevil: A timing light will tell you if your getting juice down the wire. Even without a helper you should be able to see a good flash if you point it toward the windshield while you're cranking.
I'm sure you already have but recheck your electrical connections at the back toward the firewall just to make sure they're all seated.
Sometimes it takes a long while cranking to get the lifters pressurized enough to open the valves. Good luck. LacSeville 06-26-04, 11:25 AM thanks, good suggestions. i'm going to reset my timing. i got a new dist i had to reset the dist in, so i'm going to recheck my timing. i'll do that timing light thing. didn't think of that. guess i'll just tape the trigger! i'll let you all know. Stoneage_Caddy 06-26-04, 02:01 PM remeber to keep that battery charged , if you loose cranking speed youll be there all damn day working on it LacSeville 06-26-04, 02:33 PM IT RUNS! turns out the timing was off 180*. turned to rotor about 180* and put the cap back on, and it fired right up. i turned the rotor until it ran well then i hopped in and ran it about 1500-2000 rpm for 5 mins. i ran it until the t-stat opened and then shut the car off. after it cools down i'm going to add more coolant and run it another 5 mins about 2000 rpms. then check the fluids, and give it heck!
thank you guys so much for your help! let me know if there's anything i'm missing. illumina 06-26-04, 03:33 PM IT RUNS! turns out the timing was off 180*. turned to rotor about 180* and put the cap back on, and it fired right up. i turned the rotor until it ran well then i hopped in and ran it about 1500-2000 rpm for 5 mins. i ran it until the t-stat opened and then shut the car off. after it cools down i'm going to add more coolant and run it another 5 mins about 2000 rpms. then check the fluids, and give it heck!

good deal, i didnt know that a light would work without the engine running, guess i dont know everything, oh well, that means my ex was right...:hmm: | |
