I hooked up with fellow member chris1268 today. He wanted to check out the differences between the stock tires vs the Pirelli's I had mounted for cold and wet driving. It was cold and blustery, so it was a good time to compare the cars at Autobahn. I will let him chime in with his thoughts as I've already shared mine a few times. Chris?

We took advantage of having two beautiful new V2's together for a few photos.

There's really nothing bad you can say about a clean black car. Chris's car is beautiful.

We usually open late March. With Chicago weather it can be anywhere from 25-65 degrees.

Are you going to SM for class, or is there a HPDE event there? Either way you're lucky!

We will see you May 9th, right?

Had a question about a Black V that that a local dealer has - the original buyer backed out. As I mentioned in the my last post "Black is just awesome" but still wondering if the upkeep will be a problem. I have been leaning toward the gray but my present car is BMW 545 in gray titanium so I thought a change is in order. Your car shows off the front angles of the car quite a bit while black softens the look.
What is your opinion of Black and now that you have had the car for a few weeks, are you still sold on the your color choice? I saw this color on a regular CTS and noticed a very subtle green tint - real nice but adds another $1K.
Only thing missing on the car is the polished wheel option which could be polished by a wheel company or just get them chromed but not sure if I want them that bright.

Thanks

Hi Tom,

Every color has it's plusses and minuses.

I've owned a lot of black cars over the years. One reason for not ordering black this time around is the work it takes to keep it looking clean. I will be driving this car everyday, not just when it's sunny out. As you note, all black cars, not just the V, lose some of their lines depending on the lighting. The V has a very prominent fascia with acute angles. In the shadows, these get lost on a black car. In the sunlight, black is simply awesome.

My car has been dirty more than it has been clean lately thanks to the road grime here. For some reason the Thunder Gray (TG) doesn't look dirty when it's dusty, just dull. I almost ordered Diamond White, but couldn't pull the trigger as it a near impossible paint to match up.

I am very happy with my color choice and would order it again given the six current choices.

I understand your predicament, as there is no wrong answer, it's completely subjective.

Agreed. I've had several black cars and my first silver as my current ride. The silver takes no effort to keep clean and after an automatic car wash it looks perfectly clean when dry. Requiring to buffing or waxing water spots afterwards.
In the other hand a clean black is an attention magnet and looks deviously mean. Since the V would be a summer only car I plan on getting a black V and having the wheels and possible grill/trim "black chromed" that will look totally :worship:

Thanks for the pics guys. I am down to these two colors and you made my decision ever harder. Which wheels are on these two? are they both polished?

I'd like to see the Grey with the standard wheels. I think it's a bit more "stealthy"

Maybe I'll flip a coin. I can't go wrong, they look great. I can't wait.

As you can see from my pics that short throw was kind enough to post, I have 2 black cars, the V and SRT Viper. Before that had a black XLR-V. I am a clean/polish fanatic and these cars are a bear. I can drive to the gas station and when I get home the bumpers need cleaning.

Silver is great. Had it on my M5 and my family has 3 silver Hondas--don't hardly show any dirt.

When black is clean--it is gorgeous but you have to take the picture quickly.

Silver is as easy as Black is hard in care. The STS-V is Black, but I won't own another. If it was a garage queen that would be one thing, but as a D.D. it's just a bitch.

Mike

Mike,

First of all, thanks for the info about the tires and letting me come out and check them out. For anyone out there questioning the ability of this car with a proper winter tire, let me clarify it handles great. It is a night and day difference from the stock tires. On one turn I had the ass end in mine slide out while barely hitting the gas. I then drove Mike's on the same turn with more gas and nothing. Held on like it was dry out. Made my decision even harder to leave the car in the garage. However, as the rest of this thread states, this car is very difficult to keep clean. The winter months are most likely going to be spent in the garage waiting for Spring to get here.

Tom,

I have been stopped at least 8-10 times per day since picking this car up for people that want a peek. I still firmly believe if you are willing to keep up with keeping this car clean it is the best color out there. I will say though that Mike's looked so much better in person than the pictures. For some reason the camera does not do the Grey justice. It is a beautiful color and from the sounds of it, much easier to keep looking clean. It comes down to a personal choice. I am tinting the car soon also so it should look even better after that.

Good luck with your decision, but I can promise you one thing........Whatever you get, you will not be dissapointed. This car is amazing!:worship:

Understandably some people like the look, but I wouldn't recommend driving at night with just the parking lights and driving lamps on. Dusk time is a different story. They do not throw enough light forward, but do a great job at the front of the car, and on the sides. One day I'll try to get a pic of the adaptive headlights pointed on a dark road prior to a turn.

I would agree. Usually, the first thing I do is replace the wheels (HRE) and exhaust on my cars. These wheels really accent the car well. As far as the exhuast I will wait to see what Corsa does but it will have to be awfully good to make me change.

What's also nice about these wheels as Chris and I discussed, is the tire sticks out just past the rim in case you misjudge a curb when parking. I can't remember the last factory exhaust I didn't contemplate replacing because it was too quiet. They got this one right, but I will say, it can never be too loud! :D

Thanks for the awesome pics. I tend to drive during the day with my fogs on for some strange reason. I think it just stands out more. I know when I'm driving I notice cars with them on. I never really thought of it before, but I really feel sorry for you guys in the cold weather states. I live in Texas and I've never really given a consideration to winter tires or summer tires. It's rare that they bring out sand, much less salt.

I couldn't imagine getting the V2 just at the time that you really shouldn't be driving it. But, Mike, I see from the garage at Autobahn that you do plenty well when the weather is nice, so you're still up on me. Both of the Vs pictured are beautiful. I'd love to make a trip up there to the club sometime. Nothing close to that here in the Houston area.

And, Mike...Thanks for the support here in the forums. I've noticed that you've never failed to respond to a picture or info request, and everyone here appreciates it, no question....I swear that if someone asked you what it was like driving it with the windows down, eating a hamburger and listing to NPR, you'd respond with pictures (you climbed in trunk for Christ's sake) :)

You guys may have changed my mind. You are right, the polished wheels don't look too blingy. My guess is because the surface area is smaller. I don't like them on the Escalade, they look like a full length mirror, because they are so much wider. I have yet to see the unpolished. I wish I could see them side by side against the grey.

Again, Congrats guys. I've ordered the grey and now get to wait till after Christmas here in Ann Arbor.

I completely agree with Mike - it's the little things like the wheels covering the rims that you just don't notice until you get the car. I'll give it to GM here, they did a phenominal job so far with this car. The more I see the polished, I may change my mind. My dealer thinks they have an un-polished on grey that is already spoken for, but I may go tonight and check it out. I want to place my order Thursday. If anyone has a pic of an unpolished wheel please post it and if it's on Thunder Grey you get bonus points.

I enjoyed being sort of stealthy in my last few cars. I like the understated cars with a monster engine. But this car is a little harder to hide the fact that it's a beast. Maybe it's time I get the bling.

I've got 48 hours to decide and then stew over it for several weeks waiting for it to hit the garage.

Both of those rides are very bad@ss. I would put in some quality slim ballast phillips hids in those fogs and that would help tremendously at light output at night...especially helpful when avoiding chicago's potholes in the winter.
Also if the wheels were powdercoated a satin black or black chrome than during movement the rims would practically disappear and you would see big calipers.
I had my rims powdercoated hyperblack and my brembo calipers powdercoated a nissan brembo gold and the combo is very cool. If you guys are looking to get any powdercoating done check out this place..http://www.readypowdercoating.com/ and ask for Dan, he did the coating for my calipers and he would do it over and over untill you were satisfied no extra charge.

The tires were a life saver. I actually called chris1268 on the way home to make sure his V was under lock and key. I had very little slippage and you know how awful it was. The T/C system worked wonderfully. It was actually better under heavier gas. I guess this allowed more intervention. My only real worry was the heroes driving the SUVs thinking they were superman.

I will be driving this car every minute I get. I couldn't use the HP today, but I sure enjoyed the creature comforts.

You might wanna sit this one out - sounds like the ice they are calling for is going to be brutal, and even if you make it there are a lot of idiots out there in SUV's that think 4X4 means they can drive just fine on ICE.

^ yea guys keep an eye out for sure. We are supposed to get hit with like 8-11inch tonight than another 1-3 tomorrow and also ontop of all that another 1inch of solid ice. You guy that ice and the snow on top of it and it doesnt matter if you have a monster off road truck, you will get stuck in the snow and just spin on ice sitting there. The only safe people driving in this are the people with studded/chained winter tires.

I had my rims powdercoated hyperblack and my brembo calipers powdercoated a nissan brembo gold and the combo is very cool.
"Hyperblack" looks rather gray to me. It would probably go really well with a Thunder Gray CTS.

Yes, the pictures were taken at my team unit garage on the North track.

Have you been there?

Yes Sir! A couple of times. I went for a Hyundai Genesis drive there and a couple of times to watch some Buddies drive their Z06's on the Big track! That's a Really Nice place, but a little too rich for me! Luckily enough, they get some club days that allow us "Mere Mortals" to drive on the track, but I haven't taken advantage of that yet! :D I'm just thinking of getting a Vee, but don't know if I want to give up my Vette yet! I've got an invitation to drive one, but don't know if I want to take it because of the "If I drive it, I'll want it" scenario!

Have you tracked your Vee on there yet? It'd be like the Mini Nurburgring! :D
If so, how did it feel/run? My impression is that it's a civilized race car with some Corvette C6R blood running through its veins/oil pan!

What racing team are you on?

Please Have a Happy and Safe New Year!

I have not tracked the V2 yet. We do not open until the end of March. I run a T1 car (C5 Z06) in SCAA and will run the C6R in a few NASA events for fun.

Here are a couple of eagle-eye shots where Chris and I took the pics.

I still say we should shoot for a CTS/CTS-V track day if there are enough within realistic driving distance.

You are Truly a Blessed Man! You Definitely have The Ultimate Dream Car Garage! Not only to have a New CTS-V, but a T1 Z06 AND a C6R too! WOW!

Do they allow peeps to come out and watch cars race at the Autobahn? I'd like to see either of those Vettes on the big track! With the right driver, I'll bet they haul butt, and I'm guessing that if you've got a C6R and a T1 car, you're the right driver! Thanks for sharing those pics!

Members can bring out guests and we are discussing more public access for upcoming events this year. I believe World Challenge will be here in late July.

Thank you.

The garage is headed to it's second full season. It is about 98% complete.

It is a collaboration of 10 members who are pure car enthusiasts. It has become our home away from home during race season.

Let's monitor interest as more owners take delivery. I think it would be a blast to have a lot of CTS-Vs out there, V1s and V2s.

Quick question about the color: is the CTS-v's "Thunder Grey" the same as the XLR-v's "Grey Flannel"? If not, how are they different? Anyone have any ideas? Those few dealers who carry any XLR-V's anymore out here in SoCal are holding blacks, whites and maybe a red one, and they're pretty much 08's; the Grey's a new color for 09 on the xlr-v and I've yet to see it in person.
