Hey there. i have a ETC and a DTS and maybe the CTS
and i know on ODB II PCM's you can add a message instead of "driver No 1/2" when you start you car.
when i go to the dealership can i just ask for it and slip him a couple bucks to change it over when i am in getting service.
has any of you ever done it ?

The dealer will generally do a name change/insert when you buy the car, BUT once out the door you're on your own. If you get lucky, maybe along with some other (paid) diagnostic work they would enter your name or whatever. Most members who have posted about this are more than a little pissed at the labor rate most dealers want to do a name change.

what is needed to do that.
can a independent shop do it?

A GM TECH-II diagnostic/program tool. Currently around $4,000 - $4,800 through a GM tool supplier.

Actually it has nothing to do with the PCM or OBD-II.
It has to do with the actual car, and the DIC or radio installed.
Some can be personalized and some cannot.
On some cars it is done with the Tech 2 in the IPC, some it is done on the radio using the radio controls.
It depends on the year and model.
Some cannot be changed at all and will only say "Driver 1" or "Driver 2".
The manual will tell you if it can be changed.

Most of the IPC ones I have seen require the use of the Tech 2, which can be purchased for about $3,000 to $4,000 with a CANdi module from most sources.
It is cheaper without the CANdi module (about $800 I think) but anything newer than '04 depending on model will need it.

Yeah, get your hands on a Tech 2:

Driver ID:
Continue with the following steps in order to enter a new driver ID:

Select Driver Information Center.
Select Driver #1 or Driver #2.
Select Driver #1 Name or Driver #2 Name (depending on your previous choice).
The Tech 2 tool displays directions for entering the Driver's Name. Read and press Enter.
Spell the Drivers name by highlighting the correct character and pressing enter.
Repeat untill the drivers name is spelled correctly.
Exit from the menu.

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but can this be done to my 1998 ETC? I'd like to know if the name can be set (just for driver two - I don't have the #1 keyfob. Bought it used and only had the #2 fob). I'll pay a reasonable fee to have it done, but I figured I'd ask here before I go to the dealership (or indy shop) and experience a letdown.
