: 2009 Acura TL.....a breakthrough design?

"If ever there was a car meant to look sinister in the images transmitted from a Predator drone circling overhead, It's the 2009 Acura TL. This is brave, and the more we look, the more we see a breakthrough design"

Words taken directly from the January 2009 issue of Car and Driver.

There's no way this is a breakthrough design...it's just too...hideous!

I mean it's rather nice looking in profile, but the front end is a mess...that big "hooked tooth" of a grille breaks up the visual cleanliness usually associated with Acuras, and then the rear end reflects the same theme, but it's not as heavy or as discombobulated. In profile, it kinda reminds me of a current Nissan Altima sedan, especially in the shape of the greenhouse, the look is only magnified when you examine the C-pillar area from a front 3/4 view.

I know I'm well into the minority here, but I really like Acuras' redesigns and I love the TL. It's funky and bold, especially the grilles...

The Euro-Spec Honda Accord that it's based off of is less fugly. Save some money, swap the fascias and bend the top of the H together to look like an A.:

Yeah, I like it too. At first, I hated it - but it's growing on me. It looks futuristic to me - and that's probably what I like about it. I prefer the design of the CTS, however.

Well on the bright side, with this out there, the CTS looks downright gorgeous.

I don't really like how the front and rear bumpers both come to a point in the center, like an arrowhead. Of course that doesn't bother me as much as the god awful grill, I'm not sure what the design team is smoking at acura.

How the hell is that a "break through" design! Looks like every other executive sedan that's come out in the last two years. The smiling "jack-o-lantern" grill does nothing to enhance an already hackneyed design. We are just not seeeing good, or even interesting automobile design recently. Starting with the "Bangle-dization" of the BMW the designs of the last few years have been generic copies of unattractive designs. Even Cadillac's agricultural implement inspired look is beginning to look good by comparison. Please, auto designers, if you can't come up with something new and original that looks good if not beautiful ............ then revisit the retro's of a few years back; any thing but coupe topped, hockey stick rear quarter windowed knock-offs of the next guy!

Honda/Acura has been steadily effing up the looks of every car it makes. I loved the previous TSX and liked the TL, but I loathe the new ones. I know Acura's signature grille is supposed to be some sort of chevron shape, but it just looks like a big buck tooth.

This thing is so fugly it makes the current Accord look only slightly less hideous.

Considering the Japanese horror movie looks of most current Hondas and Nissans and the boring blandness of Toyotas, Detroit -- whose cars look way better -- shouldn't be on the brink of bankruptcy. To my eyes, the CTS and Malibu are both lookers, and they're damn good cars to boot.

I saw this mess the other day in an ad....

Personally I don't like the grille... at all...

but worse yet... is the back... I mean really, when I saw it, I was ready to post a picture with the caption "The Aztek is back!" But didn't want to stir the pot.... it is really a mess tho.

The Acura I like is the now older TL... too bad it had engine and transmission problems nobody hears about cause it's Honda... and it's wrong wheel drive :-(

The Acura TL is a breakthrough design in the same way my gas earlier this morning was a breakthrough human achievement. Either way, I'm not buying it.

The grille is simply horrible, and is only tolerable in black, where it can't be seen as well. The profile view is too generic, except for the front fender accents cutting into an otherwise fine style line running the length of the car. The proportions are off, partly because of the Mazda3-esque C-pillar that makes it look like the stylists chopped off a few inches. From dead-center, the rear actually looks OK. And I do like the headlights.

At least it doesn't have awkward hood scoops.

The grill is HORRIBLE. A guy on a small local board here actully got photos of a cloaked test mule several months ago parked at a mall in Lexington.

I personally think that grill makes it look like a caricature, like it should be a character in the movie Cars.
Done up in an all black paint scheme with some police lights, it looks like a hideious 1980's futuristic car driven by robocop.

I think that's their evil plan. To make up for the Accord being so darn ugly, they decided to make their premium car even uglier. As a result, Honda buyers will see the Accord's styling as acceptable, since the more affordable car is better looking compared to its big luxurious brother. The Accord will then outsell the Camry. Evil plot succeeds!

Several months ago, when driving to work, I saw a 98-02 generation Accord coupe in front of an '08. The contrast between the lean, sleek older Accord and the fat-assed new one was striking. It made me hate the new one even more knowing what the car used to look like.

During the day... not so much.

I went to an auto show in Charlotte a while ago. Sat in the new TL, looked around at it, The chrome grille is horrid. It feels like cheap plastic, i flicked it and it sounded cheap. Maybe they should have used chrome plated metal. When the rest of the car crumples in a wreck, the chrome-plated front mounted battering ram will be sure to rupture the gas tank of all who oppose it!

I don't know if this design is so much bad, but rather the design of the 04-08 TL was so beautiful that we're spoiled. That generation of TL is easily in my top 5 late model car designs.

In the "side by side" comparison, I have to vote for the Jesda over the Acura. Yes it's a little plump and rounded, but the horrid lines of the Acura can not stand up to the bulbous curves of the new model Gulati. The Acura may devour corners with ease, but it still comes up short against the eagerness with which this year's redesigned Jesda devours a burrito.

As long as you can get past the smell and avoid mud pits, this reviewer wholeheartedly recommends the 2008 Jesda over the Acura.
