Just Purchased a 1996 Seville SLS (white diamond & chrome) with 72K miles. Car is in excellent condition in & out. This is my first Cadillac so I'm wondering if I should purchase an extended bumper to bumper warranty from my Bank (I'm looking at 2 years for $1700). I average about 10,000 miles a year with half of that in city driving. My carfax report stated that the catalytic conv. was replaced at 28K, and the intake/exhaust valves where replaced or ground at 31K. These where the only known items beside an excellant service record from day one. I plan to keep the caddy for 4 or 5 years, possible more. Would the extended warranty be worth the bucks or can I expect to be free of any Major Expense repairs for another 50K miles. I would greatly appreciate any advice or recommendations.

Third party (not GM) extended warranties have been problematic. check with your local BBB or your state's Attorney General and see if the company that will write the policy has had any problems.

Many people have paid for extended coverage policies and then, when they needed service, have been left holding a worthless piece of paper in their hands.:want:

Caveat emptor!

I've had good luck with "One Choice" They are also known as "Heritage Warranties" They have come through for my A/C compressor and a window motor both done by a Cadillac dealer

You should be able to do better on warranty price...

I bought my 98 two weeks ago and I ended up getting an extended warranty... While I was in the finance office they offered me the warranty for $2500 for 3 years... I kept turning them down until it was time to do the official paperwork... The finance guy broke down and gave me a piece of paper with his cost on it (or so he says)... But he told me to choose one and if I'd let him make $100 on the warranty then he'd be satisified with that...

In the end, I got the same 3/36 warranty offered at $2500 for $1340...

As a couple others have mentioned, go with a well known insurer, mine is through Mercury insurance... A friend of mine wasn't so lucky several years ago when he found out his warranty company went bankrupt...

My experience with warranties have not been good. Warranties cover very little. I had a car with 13k miles and it was a lemon. It was in the shop on a bi-monthly basis and they never paid for anything. Just think about the parts you normally replace on a car... Tires, brake pads, filters, plugs, tune-ups, oil service, battery, shocks\struts, etc... Guess what? None of this is covered. Maybe it's just my experiemce, but unless something major happens, chances are a warranty isn't going to cover it.

I've purchased several and have always had very good luck. The price I've paid is comparable to what you were quoted. I do, however, only buy them from the local Cadillac dealer and that is where all my service is performed. The warranty is a major investment so I try to make certain I know the company behind the sale.

While my dealers warranties state that I can have the work done anywhere I believe the selling dealer has additional motivation to see that the coverage terms are honored.

My '98 Seville was covered up to 106k mile, my '92 Allante is covered through '96k miles. It covers everything not subject to normal replacement. The only expensive repair was the struts on the Allante; everything else has been $100. Among other things, I've had the Allante ABS replaced, CD Player, several sensors; and the Seville electronics replaced. I've always saved money with the warranty but I also make certain that it is a true "bumper to bumper" policy.
