Existence precedes essence.

As Sartre puts it in his Existentialism is a Humanism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Existentialism_is_a_Humanism): "man first of all exists, encounters himself, surges up in the world – and defines himself afterwards."

ex·is·ten·tial·ism
n. A philosophy that emphasizes the uniqueness and isolation of the individual experience in a hostile or indifferent universe, regards human existence as unexplainable, and stresses freedom of choice and responsibility for the consequences of one's acts.

Existentialism is humanism. The writer of Ecclesiates also pondered the questions of meaning and existence, but he came to a different conclusion. His solution was the acknowledgement of the existence of a personal Creator Who revealed Himself. His essence precedes existence and gives life meaning.
