They can hold the length of Beethoven's 5th symphony because when Sony created the CD the CEO wanted it to be able to fit the 5th on there. Thats your random fact for the day.

80 minutes is the max. They used to make 100-minute CDs but they sucked - it eliminates a lot of the redundancy that allows a CD to still play well when you have scratches, etc.

That doesn't sound right - Beethoven's 5th is a lot shorter than 74 minutes...

The discs usually say right on them how much they will hold.
Cheapies won't, but again they are not all the same.
Most CD burning software will tell you up front how much you are burning and how many minutes remain as you load whatever you are putting on.
