From whom would one buy a crate 4.1? Why would it be better than the factory motor? How much would a crate motor cost?

check on ebay... there's a company called engines direct out of phoenix. hey usually have some cadillac motors on ebay. if not, search on google. i think i can hunt up a number if you need one. the longblock i received was primo and the price was right!

oh yeh, and they use all delco parts!

http://www.rebuilt-motors.com,

as far as a reliability standpoint, i beleive they fixed most of the bugs from the original 4.1, such as the gasket and oilflow problems. these motors, to my understanding are the "big" brother to the 4.5 and 4.9, which are cured of the 4.1 woes, such as oiling, gasket and cam problems...the costs seem to be around 1300$, with a warranty to boot. a google search,or perhaps a call to the local gm dealer may also be of some help.

A factory supplied re-manufactured engine is indeed better than the engine was new because all the later model engineering changes for sealing and fastening and such are retrofitted during the re-man process. All the wear parts are replaced with new and the core parts are remachined to factory specs. The OEM re-mans that are supplied by Engine-Master of Dallas Tx are actually tested and validated to like new durability and performance specs. Get one thru a Cadillac or GM dealer for the Goodwrench re-man engine that is certified by GM.

you should be able to pull both at once, as long as your hoist can handle the weight of the two objects.if you dont want to pull both at once, just make sure all the mounting and hardware are seperated from each other. also, i would pull the radiator for sure, that would be about a 350$$ mishap if things start to fly around, so i would pull it too.
