: Has anyone been to Iceland?

I just got cheap tickets to fly to Iceland late October to early November. Has anyone been there? I'll be going to the capital, Reykjavik. Anyone heard anything or have tips/suggestions?

I envy you the opportunity to go to Iceland. I have not been there but I remember the scuttlebut, from my years as an international traveller, was that Iceland had, on average, the best looking women on the planet. They also have some of the most extreme off-roading around. Stay away from "lutefisk." The night life has a reputation for being good. The country's economy is in a bit of bind due to problems with the banks and their overseas clients. Take stuff you can layer to keep warm, down jackets always seem to work best. Enjoy the geyser fed baths and volcano created landscape and you should have a great time!

Crap! I just looked at tickets...fifteen hundred bucks!

What are you going for? I've been wanting to go there for YEARS but have never found anyone that would go with!

My brother and his wife went there for their honeymoon. Buy all your warm clothes there. My brother came back with blankets and sweaters worth killing for. So nice...

Any questions and I could ask him...

Icleland airlines is discounting rates real cheap... I found round trip airfare non stop from NY for $500. I want to know if there's a good place not too far from the capital Reykjavik to spend two nights in. Somewhere in the country. I want to spend the end of my trip in the capital city. I'd really appreciate some locations to go to. I'll be renting a car the whole time. I read an article about how bad their economy was doing and just on a whim checked their airfare rates. They were dirt cheap along with the hotel rooms.

I have always wanted to go there also.

As a side note, I have read from various sources that 99% of Icelandic chicks wont touch a foreign guy.

i have been.

the local people tend to like Americans. be warry of the drunked Icelandic men as the sometimes like to headbutt you for no reason. theyre not mean or anything, just how it is. there are MANY MANY HOT CHICKS and most are sluts. they view sex very differently than we do. its no big deal there. Most people can speak English well enough to understand you. its part of thier school ciriculum. if someone there says they dont understand you then theyre most likely lying to you. just ask them if they took English in school and if they passed if you feel like putting them in their place.

Icelandic food is awesome for the most part. you MUST HAVE a lambdog, a hotdog made from sheep. it is pretty much like eating awesome on a bun-- and i dont like hot dogs that much. be very careful of themore traditional Icelandic foods because theyre uhh....sick. cured ram balls, blood sausage [ sausage filled with blood and cooked ], and singed sheep heads. have at it if you want but i steered well clear of it. other than that, Iceland has anything anyone else has. fast food resturaunts n stuff like that.

bring LOTS of cash. when i say lots i mean a BOATLOAD. 4 years ago, a single bud light was EIGHT DOLLARS. everything there is insanely high priced because its an island. things are a bit different now because the recent market events have hitthe country pretty hard so it may not be as bad but stuff still isnt cheap. also, make Icelandic friends. Most Icelanders carry around a decent amount of cash and will pay for nearly everything. they have alot more free money than we do as a whole. lastly, get a rental car. no iffs ands or butts. its just as car entrenched a country as the US is when it comes to transportation. in town its not too bad, but traveling to see the sites is a pita without your own car.

the sites....seriously tehres jsut too much to list. do whatever you can afford but be careful cause theres just so much to see. oh! go visit the hot springs!

the weather there ranges from 40-65F in the summer and from 0-40F in the winter. winter is defined by dark days and summer is defined as light nights. when you go itll look like 9pm at 1:30pm.

i cant think of anything else now but if you want to know specifics and itll probably come back to me. i spent 3 months there TDY. :)

Thanks for the advice guys... finally got settled in from getting back. I'm not sure if I'm posting the pictures correctly, but giving this a shot. More to come if this works out. Iceland was a blast. The natural beauty was unbelievable, the ladies were gorgeous, and the nightlife was outrageous. I gave up around 6 am. The city was still going strong.

Well that's it for the highlights. It's funny, when you have a digital camera, you tend to take so many more pictures than you normally would have with film. I ended up taking over 500! While the conversion rate is great compared to a year ago, stuff still costs pretty high over there. That last dinner in the photos ended up costing about $120 for two people! A year ago it would have been double. I'd say cost of stuff there right now is a little higher than Manhattan prices. I can't imagine visiting there a year ago. That's an Opel Astra in the picture that I rented. It was the most basic car with automatic transmission. I could have driven a manual if I had to, but, I thought it's not a good idea to be fussing around with that in an unfamiliar territory.

glad you had a good time like i did.

i forgot to mention that theres a kart track outside of Kef, half way between Reyk n Kef. for $40 you get to drive a 60mph kart and you wear a helmet and firesuit. you get practice laps, qualifying laps, feature race and main event for a trophy/ribbon. lotsa fun.
