: Not all steel wheels are created equal? Hubcap fitting issue 92FWB

So when i bought the car it had the old school platter style hubcaps and i always wanted the 'fake' wire wheel hubcaps. So I scored myself a nice set a few mos ago and finally got around to putting them on.

They come with a retainer clip that bolts under the lug nuts to keep the hubcap in place, which is great except for one problem.. it doesn't reach the hubcap. I put the hubcap on and gently tap it into place with a rubber mallet and when you look through the hole in the middle of the hubcap with a flashlight you can see that the thread of the mount is about 3/4 of an inch short of reaching the thread on the hubcap.

And by the way i know its supposed to be bolted on i just placed it between the lug nuts for a visual so i didnt have to put it back on ;)

Ya know I had this problem once before. I had the exact same tires on my Olds wagon with more tread. I was just going to switch over the wheels and all, but I couldn't get that brass holding device to work. It didn't reach! So I didn't go through with it. My only thoughts were that the wheels were somehow different even though the wheels were the same.

I don't know what to tell you. However upon inspection of both wheels, they did not appear different. So it baffles me. I guess you could just put them on like regular ones, but they won't lock. And I don't know if they're designed to be secure that way either.

Maybe put a few lug nuts under it?

Best,
Greg

What happened to the SS wheels?

What happened to the SS wheels?

They now reside on my black Roadmaster "SS" wagon that I sold 3 months ago... somewhere in Washington state.

I have the wire caps on my '91 Brougham. Give me a call before I head to Miami next weekend.

I bet you have 7" wheels, and those centers are designed for 6". I think that would account for your problem. I know for sure the early to mid 80s wheels were 6". Does anyone know if the 90-92 cars got 7" wheels? Maybe part of the trailer package (5.7 motor)?

Anybody have any pics of them on a 90-92?

That would make sense and that is just about how short I am of reaching.

I solved the same problem by knocking the threaded stud out of the retainer, and replacing it with a longer bolt - I don't remember the size, 1/4-20 x 1 maybe, it was a common size...

It is going to look good with the later style alloys:
