If you use an aftermarket Air filter it can screw up the MAF

The Trans can actually fail.
You may find a P0101 or P0171 or P0174 in the PCM. You may even find a P0300. You may find all the DTC's set.

I have seen this first hand on a few car. Anything from a SRX to a FWD car even on Trucks.

This bulletin is being revised to add models and model years. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 04-07-30-013A (Section 07 -- Transmission/Transaxle).




First, Inspect the vehicle for a reusable aftermarket excessively/over- oiled air filter

DO NOT repair MAF sensors under warranty if concerns result from the use of an excessively/over-oiled aftermarket, reusable air filter.

The use of an excessively/over-oiled aftermarket, reusable air filter may result in:

Service Engine Soon (SES) light on

Transmission shift concerns, slipping and damaged clutch(es) or band(s)

Engine driveability concerns, poor acceleration from a stop, limited engine RPM range

The oil that is used on these air filter elements may be transferred onto the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor causing contamination of the sensor. As a result, the Grams per Second (GPS) signal from the MAF may be low and any or all of the concerns listed above may occur.

When servicing a vehicle with any of these concerns, be sure to check for the presence of an aftermarket reusable, excessively/over- oiled air filter. The MAF, GPS reading should be compared to a like vehicle with an OEM air box and filter under the same driving conditions to verify the concern.

The use of an aftermarket reusable air filter DOES NOT void the vehicle's warranty.

If an aftermarket reusable air filter is used, technicians should inspect the MAF sensor element and the air induction hose for contamination of oil prior to making warranty repairs.

Transmission or engine driveability concerns (related to the MAF sensor being contaminated with oil) that are the result of the use of an aftermarket reusable, excessively/over-oiled air filter are not considered to be warrantable repair items.

If you have a car the does not use a Throttle cable and uses ETC you will really have issues. One of the major components to the ETC is the MAF. If the MAF is off the PCM has a terrible time guessing what angle the throttle plate needs to be :histeric:

Oil the filter ONLY as recommended and keep the MAF clean with MAF cleaner. If you take the time to do these things correctly you'll be fine.

It's the guys who think more is better and oil the crap out of the filter. The the oil contaminated the MAF sensor wires.

Wouldn't it be cheaper and less harmful to the engine to use a dry panel filter which offers more flow and less danger to the intake system than some highly marketed oil-impregnated units ??

Any of us can hype and market anything, but is it really better ??

I have blown them out with shop air and still found a puddle of oil in the bottom of the CAI housing

How about claim on better MPG :histeric:

I can prove that a CLEAN stock air filter and a Clean Aftermarket type in question will make no change in MPG. If the Aftermarket is oiled up it will be worse :histeric:

AJ, For less than the cost of an aftermarket oiled cotton filter you can rebuild the entire intake tract of a mid-year Seville/Deville and wind up with a far better system. All a CF member needs to do is search the threads: You and several of us have debunked the CAI myth many times over......the answer to a lot of the Northstar 1999-2003 air intake questions is in your garage toolbox.

code, Absolutely correct, but you did above and beyond work to get the entire system to work properly....It wasn't just a bolt and go proposition, was it ?

Not really. You can do that but it's a real sloppy install.

There's no way to mount the Volant box as it comes so the plenum runner kind of holds it in place.

The inlet on the box is ridiculous in size, it's not round, and it has no way of sealing to the radiator support. I'm sure it would draw at least some hot air form the engine compartment.

The factory lid sucks, plain and simple. Volant should be ashamed for even shipping that POS.

So right, I did a little custom work by mounting it securely, fabricating an new inlet that fits the car and had a nice aluminum lid made.

BUT we're talking about the filter element here right? Or were you talking about the intake system in general?

stng, Yes, the 2000-2003 airbox, which is already a fully functional CAI system, can be opened 2 ways: ......Either go out the fender side with a rectangular hole and cut a foam gasket which seals to the existing opening in the inner fender stamping, or go out the bottom, enlarging the existing opening, fabricate a spigot which is pop-riveted to the airbox, and carry a 3" flex tube down to the lower grille area. There's really not a lot of airbox "meat" to work with, so both approaches done together offer the most potential airflow, and are very hard to detect with a casual look. Change to a WIX panel filter which offers essentially no flow restriction (more pleats, more surface area).

It's pretty educational to temporarily rig a 0 - 30" vacuum gauge to a T on the throttlebody manifold vacuum side and do some WOT's with different panel filters, and a couple with no filter. Blows away a lot of advertising myths. (If you can get your manifold vacuum to less than 2" at WOT redline there is absolutely nothing more to be done, short of nitrous or supercharging, that will make the intake tract "better".)
