When a BMW 335i owner in Munich became bored with his black coupe, he hired a team to wrap it in white tape. Two days later, he drove home in his refreshed "Alpine White" coupe (with an M3-appearing black roof). No, it's not normal tape. It's a special 3M wrap, and the process is known as "foiling." Apparently, the German military has been using the process (with an olive drab tape) for some time now. Likewise, the process is popular with race teams and taxi companies. Available in countless colors, the tape itself is thick enough to protect the paint from minor chips and nicks, and it can be left adhered to the surface for 3-4 years without damage (!). Adhesion isn't a problem either, as the tape can even withstand an automatic car wash without peeling off.

This stuff has been used in NASCAR for years. It takes about 8hrs. to do a Sprint Cup car, decal ads and all.

The thing I don't get about this is that it cost this guy $1500 to do this and for that amount you can get a paint job

If you have the money for a 335i and to do something weird like this then you have the money to paint it back to black again

If you've ever seen a Sprint Cup car up close you'll have to agree that there isn't a $1500 paint job in the world that looks anywhere near as good.

A decent paint job on my Mustang would have cost me neighborhood of 3k+ about 5 years ago. I could get it done for 1500 at Maaco I suppose ...

Paint jobs must be a whole lot cheaper in PA.

Vinyl wraps are easy to reverse to the original color, cheaper than a repaint, and will protect the car underneath from road grime, salt, oxidation, scratches and chips. You'll start seeing more and more of these as it gains popularity and acceptance. If done correctly, it is indistinguishable from paint and with a high gloss overlaminate will last up to 7 years without fading in direct sunlight (something that even the best auto paints would have trouble matching).

Here around the Wal-Mart HQ I'm starting several trucks and cars wrapped with big advertisements of their products. I don't care for the advertisements but it's an interesting way to change the color of your vehicle. I like it on this guy's BMW.

Most of the flat black (or as the kids call it- "Murdered out") vehicles use the same technique.

We got our 1986 Lincoln Mark VII LSC repainted and it cost us $1500-2000 (it's been awhile) and it's just as good as any other $3000+ paint job.
