: Survey time: 40psi Oil Pressure at Idle?

I searched around but couldn't find this discussed anywhere.

I never really paid attention to my oil pressure (normally I keep the display set to oil temperature), but noticed recently that the oil pressure hovers around 40psi at idle.

That seems kind of high to me, so I checked the shop manual- it lists the minimum pressure as 6psi @ 1,000 rpm, 18 @ 2,000 and 24 @ 4,000. I'm running the stock oil pump and no aftermarket accessories or pullies that could be overdriving it, so I'm a little stumped.

If any fellow owners could chime in with their idle reading, I'd appreciate it.

44 Psi here, at idle - motor cold.

Seems about right. At start up, its near 60psi, then goes down.

Ah, good. There's no MAX specification in the Shop Manual, and 8x the minimum seemed excessive.

Thanks for checking, Twitch and Darkman.

Yeah, in the 40s is what I recall.

I think mine is around 37-38 at idle.

40-42 at idle when cold and 29-30 at idle when everything heats up to normal temp.

You better get that checked out!

So mine's ('06) at 40'ish at cold idle, but now you've got me worried because when I watch it during driving, it's up around 70-80 at 4-5kRPMs. Since it looks like the gauge only goes up to 100 (no top number shown, but that's what it looks like) I'm concerned that the 70-80 is way high. Also, it looks like it will keep climbing right to the top if I go above 5k.

Suddenly I'm driving like a grandma scared to take it over 4k. I know Tony said the shop manual shows no Max, but that gauge makes it look like it's a bad thing to get it up around the top end (as in "we're only measuring to this point. If you're over it, well - good luck!").

So, new question for the thread - what's your oil pressure up around 6k+? :helpless:

after a cold start, mine runs higher than the warm idle. from a cold start its around 40-45 psi. once it heats up, the idle pressure drops to 32-34psi.

On my way home last night, I only got it up to about 5700. It was 67psi. After warm up it idles in the high 30s.
I'm running Mobile 1, 5w30. Dunno if the oil makes a difference. How about temperature? With my POS tuner, my temps are around 200 (usually 220-230).

Where you been hiding, D?

Had a chance to drive the V today ... went to Lowe's. :D Never got above 2k RPM and got no cold readings.

Ambient temp = 78 deg F
First drive on fresh 6 qts of 5W-30 Mobil 1, new Fram TG-3506 filter.
Mileage = 41,787 miles

Readings (warm):

32-33 psi @ ~800 RPM (idle) with oil temp = 195 deg F

44 psi @ ~2,000 RPM with oil temp = 201 deg F

Seems to me that 40 psi at idle, if that was when the car is warm, is a bit high. If that was cold, then it would seem just right ... to me, anyway.

I've been lurking. Since I retired I have been spending less time on the computer and more time riding by motorcycle and shooting skeet.

My 2005 CTS-V shows 42 psi at idle and cold engine. Pressure goes to 50 psi at 2k RPM, still with cold engine.

This is my final report. After about 12 miles of continuous driving, some at 75-80 MPH on the Interstate, the oil pressure dropped (as expected) from 42 psi at cold idle to 32 psi at hot idle with oil temp at 205 degrees F and water temp at 197 degrees F. This is with Mobil 1 engine oil.

I gotta get back to the range, never did skeet though.
