I need a cat for an 01 STS. The muffler shop didn't stock one and "couldn't" get one. Shopped around and many parts places didn't/couldn't/wouldn't have one. A mechanic buddy of mine found one for $355.
Am I stuck with this being the only option? What alternatives and who sells them?

Original GM parts. There are many threads in here over the past 3 years on emissions and code problems with aftermarket cats. The OEM is a high-flow unit and a significant part of the sensor and engine controls system depends on what that cat does to the "after cat" O2 sensor output.
You can try anything you want, but be ready for emissions and "service engine soon" lights.

I purchased one off of ebay for me 00 Lade. It came with free shipping right to my door. It was around $275 or so versus the $1006 the dealer wanted. Me mechanic charged another $100 to throw it on for me. And I was a happy camper. God Bless,Joe

Sadly, a lot of times on Seville bodies the catalyst only comes with the complete exhaust! (this is more of an issue for CA cars)
48 state cars have a cat service kit you can buy. Try looking OE if you can and get a price.
Fooling around in the aftermarket on cats usually gets you a headache.
However, you get a 5 year 50,000 mile warranty by law. The cat must do the same job as the OE and if you get it replaced and the MIL comes on they have to keep fixing it until they get it right or you can go after them on it. A lot of grief though....
The complete exhaust can be around $1,300 depending on application.

Oh and by the way, the catalyst and ECM are usually 8 year 80,000 mile warranty components.
Be sure to check with the dealer.
How do you know it is bad?
My 2002 STS had its Cat replaced under the 8 year warranty...
And let me say that the quality of the OEM cat has me looking at it with one eyebrow up. The original was a complete unit and the replacement is a cut and replace... bolted to the the exhaust manifold... but just clamped to the head pipe... and it hangs down a good inch maybe inch and a half lower then the original unit...
I can also add that my wife has a aftermarket "direct fit" cat on her 99 4Runner with zero issues and I have a universal fit cat on my 87 442 with zero issues too.
I would always try for OEM parts first... but just cause the OEM part cost 10 times more doesn't make it 10 times better.
