View Full Version : tire pressure monitor service warning Had a new self-correcting "bug" occur over the weekend. Had a warning come up on the driver info center that said, "Service Tire Pressure Monitor" or something like that. I had just hit a pretty sharp bump in the road with all four tires at 45-50MPH. I cycled through the options in the driver info center to view my tire pressure and noticed where you normally see "Rear Left 35 PSI" or similar, it said "Rear Left --". The proper tire pressure registered for all of the other three tires. I stopped to be sure the left rear wasn't going flat (did I mention I had hit a fairly SHARP bump?").
Left rear looked okay. I turned off the car and started it back up since this seems to sometimes mitigate some of the electronic bugs that I had early in the life of this 2006 Lux II. (just like any other computer)
Left rear still didn't register. I arrived at my destination last night and parked. Got up this morning and that left rear monitor was working fine. Go figure. (Maybe that big bad bump hut it's wittle feewings, but now it's all better).
By the way, do those individual stem mounted monitors ever require battery replacment? I assume they require some sort of power source to transmit the signal to the vehicle info center. (I drive my cars a long time) goody69 07-01-08, 11:21 AM I have experienced a similar issue with my 2006 DTS Performance model. There is a GM Technical Service Bulletin 07-08-52-001A that addresses a potential cause of this problem. I would suggest checking with your dealer on this Service Bulletin. I have had other "electronic bugs" that haunted me momentarily on this vehicle, but most all never returned.
Did the dealer actually DO anything to your vehicle after your incident? I have LOTS of warranty left so I am not in a rush to visit them until necessary. And today that same tire is registering as "7PSI" on the Driver Info Center, even though the tire is clearly fully inflated.
Guess I'll call the dealer and check out that service bulletin. Thank for the heads up. goody69 07-03-08, 11:11 AM My tire pressure system issue started after the vehicle was out of warranty. I have not resolved the tire pressure system issue and it continues intermittently. I had a ton of electrical parts replaced while the vehicle was under warranty. Do NOT put off having any issue you are having documented by your dealer while still under warranty. Good luck! tedcmiller 07-07-08, 09:25 AM Although there have been no problems with the TPSs on either the 2004 or 2008 DTSs (my wife's cars), I have had problems with TPSs on both my 2004 and 2005 CTS-Vs. The rigid valve type of TPS used on the 2004 DTS and both of the CTS-Vs are notorious for leaking air around defective gaskets used to seal the rigid valve stem to the wheel.
The problem in which the TPS indicates an incorrect pressure or no indication at all (--- displayed and a warning) has occurred with at least two of the eight TPSs on the CTS-Vs. In one case, the no-indication problem went away after a few miles of driving and never returned. In two other cases, the TPS was determined to be defective and was replaced under warranty. I have also experienced valid low (or no) pressure warnings due to a leaking gasket and punctures.
Moral - always check the actual tire pressure with a gauge when the TPM says you have a problem. The TPM might be lying, but it might also be correct. Better safe than sorry. And today that same tire is registering as "7PSI" on the Driver Info Center, even though the tire is clearly fully inflated.
Guess I'll call the dealer and check out that service bulletin. Thank for the heads up.
The next day this particular tire pressure monitor worked fine (yet again, after misbehaving the day before). I called the Caddy dealer and asked abotu the Service Bulletin that was referenced in this thread earlier. That service bulletin doesn't sound like it is specific to this problem as best I could interpret when it was read to me. And that was two to three week ago. The monitor is still working fine even though it had acted up twice.
Yet another gremlin that has surfaced momentarily... only to disappear. esterkin50 07-31-08, 06:47 PM I went to the dealer and they replaced faulty sensor. tedcmiller 08-04-08, 09:38 AM In cases where intermittent problems with TPMs occurred, I waited until the problem showed up, drove the car to the dealer and showed them the problem before turning the car off (sometimes a restart will temporarily eliminate the problem). This always resulted in the TPM being replaced under warranty and the problem with that TPM was resolved (i.e., it never reoccurred). TulsaVic 08-04-08, 02:48 PM Just got into my 08 after a week of having it parked at the airport and had the yellow tire indication. Tire pressures were 30psi in back and 32psi in front. Got home and added some air. Pressures now read 34psi in front, 32psi in rear, but still have the light. The manual says being close to high frequency radio signals (or something similar) can set off the system. I'm thinking it was the airport radar.... Will stop by the dealer and see if there's an easy reset (hitting the panel's check button did nothing....) tedcmiller 08-13-08, 10:36 AM All four of my Cadillacs with TPMs have been to and around the airport where I live with no problems. dkozloski 08-13-08, 05:34 PM When operating the car while ambient temperatures are around the freezing mark the TPMS was intermittant. This all started after a changeover between winter and summer tires. It transpires that the tire dealer's air compressor system was full of water from condensation and the tire tech delivered a shot of water to the tires. After much complaining by me the shop air system was drained of water, the tires deflated and dried, and reinflated. Now all is well. |
