Scary thoughts about the very real potential of $200 oil and the resulting nasty consequences, including $7-a-gallon gasoline, in this front-page article from today's (6/28/08) Los Angeles Times:

The oil bubble is about to burst. So you don't have to worry about it climbing to $200. Notice how gas prices have settled in the last few days.

Well, I will warn you those are famous last words per se... but yea you've generally got the right idea.

When billionaires are taking out full 30 second commercial airtime slots to hype "their solution" to the oil problem and Hybrids don't last 45 minutes on the lot let me be the first to tell you the "OPEC gangsters" as my friend Bill Oreilly loves to call them, are now running scared. Sure they're reaping the benefits NOW, but they didn't get where they are by being idiots, and they know long term sustained profitability means not chasing away their core customer, or giving rise to one in a thousand crazy schemes that JUST might take hold and throw a wrench in their perpetual gears. The American consumer may at times be slow and stupid, but poke us enough and we WILL bite you.

I got my home heating oil contract in the mail today. I'll be making 10 payments of $836/month to heat my house.

Good lord dude. We use natural gas to heat our house, the water and the dryer and it only costs us $160-$200 a month in the winter and about $30-$50 in the summer.

Anchorage has natural gas from Cook Inlet and they pay about 25% what we pay for the same amount of heat. Since Anchorage has over 50% of the population of the entire state and they dominate the legislative process, the legislature could care less what we have to pay. They are about to get caught in the bight of the line however. Cook inlet gas is rapidly being depleted and they're going to have to go to the North Slope for more which means a gas pipeline through Fairbanks. Until then we'll either pay through the nose or leave. The legislature sits on a budget surplus in the multi-billions and is supposed to be working on a home heating aid package but it hasn't happened yet. Serious estimates are that as much as 20% of the population of Fairbanks will be leaving this winter because they won't be able to survive.

My GMS pricing, 0 down, 0% interest payment on my STS is only slightly more than that.

Sure we'll see $200/bar oil... just not anytime soon. While there were several contributing factors to the unprecedented rise... this rise was essentially an exercise in finding the limit of what Americans are willing to pay and they've pretty much found it (for now anyway...).

Unfortunately... once prices start dropping, people in this country will immediately start back to their old ways - driving excessively, gas-hogs, etc... It's a shame that collectively, as a nation... we're pretty damn thick. The day we actually learn from our lessons we'll be much better off for it.

Did I read right or is that a misprint?? $836 a month to heat up your home? That's ridiculous and I hope all these oil execs and such get indicted or something for robbing the public blind. They know we need fuel to survive so they continue to increase prices. What we gonna do, stop driving and stop heating our homes? They know they got us and they gonna squeeze every last cent they can outta us all. I go up to $10 a gallon on fuel before I'd have to put me Lade up and get a rice burner. I wont be too happy about it but if it ever did get to $10 gallon that's what I'd have to do. Hey Kozloski, move to New Jersey. The state government will rob you in other ways instead of through fuel. They'll get you here through property taxes and car insurance. God Bless,Joe

Yeah, but he gets a check every year from the state from their oil profits so don't feel too bad for him.

The state is making money by the boxcar load from the high price of crude because the state receives a large percentage of it's royalty income in actual crude oil that it sells on the spot market. We have a state budget surplus in the billions. The state lawmakers are working now on a plan to rebate some of this money to the residents to help us with our energy bills. If all goes as planned the residents of New Jersey and the rest of the lower 48 will be helping me fill my oil tank. Of course this rebate is in addition to the check every resident receives from the earnings of the states permanent fund which is also overflowing with oil money. You win some and you lose some.
