Rest in Peace. urbanski 06-23-08, 07:28 AM i saw him live in biloxi. RightTurn 06-23-08, 10:33 AM "Carlin was born on May 12, 1937, and grew up in the Morningside Heights section of Manhattan, raised by a single mother. After dropping out of high school in the ninth grade, he joined the Air Force in 1954. He received three court-martials and numerous disciplinary punishments, according to his official Web site." Look urb. He was Air Force. :D (And shouldn't that be "courts-martial"?) Sorry to hear of the death of the Hippy-Dippy Weatherman. :( The Tony Show 06-23-08, 10:50 AM He was a lot funnier in the 70s and 80s than later in life. I really enjoy his older routines, but he became far too preachy, condescending and insulting in the last 10 years. It's the same problem I had with Bill Hicks and Eric Bogosian- too much degrading stereotyping and social commentary, not enough funny. thebigjimsho 06-23-08, 11:15 AM He was on Boston radio for about 3 months before being promptly fired for taking the station's van and driving it to NYC to buy some pot... Florian 06-23-08, 11:17 AM GC was brilliant. I absolutely loved his stuff, he will be missed. F gary88 06-23-08, 01:03 PM I know he narrated Thomas the Tank Engine, I watched that a ton growing up. As much as he wouldn't want to admit it, he had a very humane side. RIP. Jesda 06-23-08, 01:11 PM F***ing sh**! Damn c*******ing c***s! Go p*** up a p***s! RIP. I~LUV~Caddys8792 06-23-08, 01:56 PM Wow, he wasn't that old. :( dwight.j.carter 06-23-08, 02:00 PM That really sucks I miss him already ! dkozloski 06-23-08, 02:02 PM I thought his schtick, obscene language and counterculture, to be boring and sophomoric. A good cursing out can be pure art but the gratuitous use of vulgarities tells you more than you want to know about the user. Nobody would have paid any attention to him if he hadn't been banned and rejected as just another blue nightclub act gone mainstream. The protesters of the '60s and '70's thought it was another good way to stick their finger in the old man's eye to listen to him. He fell into the same trap as many of his contemporaries, and wrecked his health and career with the heavy use of drugs. He established the bottom in bottom-feeder. He wasn't just the narrator... he was "Mr. Conductor" after Ringo Starr left the role... Koz, While I respect your opinion, I must disagree. His schtick was better than 99% of his peers of the time (Pryor, Martin, Bruce, et al...) due to his intellectual way of bringing it to you. It wasnt all shit, piss and mother****er..his stuff was well thought out and the nuances of the situation were the stuff he picked up on. It was brainiac potty humor...you had to think about it. While we may disagree on him, he will undoubtably be missed by many, myself included. F dkozloski 06-23-08, 05:37 PM Koz, While I respect your opinion, I must disagree. Blue night club acts were left to Redd Foxx. Red Skelton put on a performance for the United Nations that was 90 minutes without a word spoken that had people from every nation on earth rolling on the floor. There was no filth, no putdowns, no witty barbs. Nobody defamed, criticized, or insulted. Now days everything has to have an edge, and a target. It's all a testament to the coarsening of the culture. blue07cts 06-23-08, 06:59 PM damn, he was one of the greats and will be missed................. gothicaleigh 06-23-08, 07:18 PM He was a lot funnier in the 70s and 80s than later in life. He was a comedian of his time. Good observation. He was a product of the times. One of the secrets of success is the right schtick at the right time. I guess he was over some peoples head that had there head where the sun don't shine. dkozloski 06-23-08, 08:53 PM I agree with you Florian, he was one of the best. He will be missed. Jesda 06-24-08, 12:17 AM Here, there, and everywhere. Hip, hip, so hip to be square. Red_October_7000 06-24-08, 02:59 AM I raise my glass to his passing... one of the greatest comics ever. He had such a great wit and his ability to play with everyday circumstances and absurdities was one of his best features. I too feel that later in life he simply became angry and preachy, and while I don't enjoy his work from that period at all, I do cut him some slack, his wife died on his birthday. Pretty shit, that. hardrockcamaro@mac.c 06-24-08, 07:56 AM OMG! He was my favourite comedian. My thanks to the British press for not giving this any real coverage... Personally I loved his cursing and frank and open commentary. I don't think he was a product of the times in the way many are suggesting. As far as I'm concerned he's counter-culture. He says the things other people think but dare not say and that's what I admire. So he is a product of the times as he wouldn't feel the need to say a lot of what he said if it wasn't for the censorship and tip-toeing political correctness that have taken over the world... My favorite routine will always be the airline announcements. I cannot get on a plane and sit through he safety lecture without chuckling to myself... I guess he was over some peoples head that had there head where the sun don't shine. Some of the best comedians are the ones that never had an HBO special. Carlin used to be funny, but was far from "one of the best". He became so wrapped up in his "counter culture" shtick that he stopped being funny (unless you find being grossly insulting and factually incorrect about the Government, White People and Religion "funny"). Nothing he said went over my head, nor do I have my head up my ass, I simply get enough vitriol and blind criticism in my daily life that I don't need more from a comic. I also find the comics who can skewer a subject without being mean spirited to be much funnier (such as Lewis Black, to name one). All this being said- the man had talent, and may he rest in peace. dkozloski 06-24-08, 02:13 PM Some of the best comedians are the ones that never had an HBO special. I agree. It's why I made the remark about the coarsening of the culture. George Carlin lived in a zero sum world where he had to tear one person or idea down to advance another. He was very good at what he did but that's lke praising the talents of Ted Bundy. DopeStar 156 06-25-08, 01:10 AM I always thought he was from NJ? Red_October_7000 06-25-08, 04:37 AM ...."Please return the stewardess to her orriginal, upright position"... I laughed for days. Now I will again having thought of that. | |
