: Water pump 'sound'?

Am nursing my 94 Eldo/VIN 9 (130k) until I can get the head gaskets replaced at the end of the month and neglected to top off the coolant reservoir this morning. I found myself in limp-home mode after toodling through city traffic and pulled into my neighborhood Shell. There I sprayed coolant on me and car and ground after impatiently removing the still-pressurized rad cap...luckily not burned..anyway, the nice man at the station came out to see if I was all right, offered to hose down the engine and fill the rad. As he was doing this he said it 'sounded' like it needed a water pump and pointed out the whirring, aluminum on aluminum sound that's troubled me for months...
Anybody else 'heard' their water pump on its last legs? The car's been driveable as long as I top off the coolant but today it limped home twice in about 5 miles of 35mph driving which is an order of magnitude or 2 worse than I'm used to...can the water pump be diagnosed independently of the gaskets? Hoses are new, nothing leaks on the ground after running...

Well...since the water pump is at the rear of the engine it should be pretty easy to listen around and diagnose the source of the noise to tell if it is the pump or not.....

Use a piece of rubber hose like a stethascope to isolate the noise. Stick one end in your ear and move the other end around the engine compartment to find the noise.

Sounds more like an idler pulley or the idler on the belt tensioner to me off hand.....

Thanks! I don't think it's the water pump cuz it doesn't get any louder there using the hose-a-scope...this is a grinding sort of noise that seems to be strongest around the engine block...
