View Full Version : 02 STS Keyless Entry? Chasespeed 06-12-08, 05:48 PM I just picked up an 02 STS, loving this car...
Have a few questions. Was there a keyless entry factory for this car?
AND, the key has PK3 on it, I assume thats akin to VATS?
Doing some reading, and alot of searching. BUT, I havent found anything very specific.
Thanks,
Chase submariner409 06-12-08, 06:02 PM You should have received 2 black keys and 2 key fob transmitters stamped #1 and #2, as well as a gray generic valet Key, all keys stamped PK3. You'd better track them all down because they are not cheap to replace and the car is not complete without them.
The switch in the left glove box is the valet switch: turn it off and the only thing you can do with the gray key is drive the car anywhere at any time, but you can't use the gas cap or trunk controls.
The whole explanation and pages of how to program (personalize) the key fobs and driver 1 & 2 settings are in your owners manual.
You should read the entire manual. Twice, three times......What is the date (00/00) printed on the specification sticker on the driver's door? It makes a difference as to just what STS you have, as does the coded RPO sticker on the underside of the spare tire cover. The Regular Production Option codes are in a sticky "RPO codes" at the top of one of these forums. Chasespeed 06-12-08, 06:12 PM Nope. One key, no fobs. I do have the manual, and a bunch of literature.
Oh well, guess here the fun begins.
I will look at the date, and RPOs when I get home today. I am stuck on the d*** quarterdeck till then...
Thanks,
Chase submariner409 06-12-08, 06:23 PM Quarterdeck ??? I have my time packing a .45 on the deck of a diesel boat in New London, CT at midnight in January at -13F. (LOTS of time......)
Pursue the key fobs........I'm not the only one that will tell you the setup is expensive, and a pain to dealer replace/upgrade.
Hey....Go back in your profile and enter your car, mileage, year, location, etc. Makes it easier for members to assess your needs...... mighty_quad4 06-12-08, 06:29 PM i had to get a replacement key for my STS. it only came with 1 key and 1 fob. the key was $47, the remote was $110 and they charged me $47 to get the fob to work with the car. i elected not to get a valet key since i do not trust anyone but me to drive my car. im young enough that i can walk the extra 3 minutes to park a bit futher away. Chasespeed 06-12-08, 06:43 PM Well, I called, and that was all that was turned over with the car.
This is South Texas, and I am happy to have found a nice car... that hasnt been.... ruined.
I dont wanna spend the money, but, on the flip side, I will. I hate playing games with people. I will harass the dealer some more, or at least have him provide the stuff at dealer cost.
I will fill out the profile when I close up, and get home later...
Thanks,
Chase submariner409 06-12-08, 06:51 PM I don't want to belabour the point, but the 2 key fobs and 3 keys are technically part of the car. If the dealer (Cadillac or GM dealer?) charged near top retail then you are entitled by law to all the car parts. vacuumbed 06-12-08, 08:14 PM I'm in the same boat. When I bought my 03 Seville, it only had one key and remote#2. They were'nt in the best shape.
I got lucky on ebay and found 2 brand new uncut PK3 Genuine GM Cadillac keys and two brand new Genuine GM keyfob remotes, #1 and #2.
I had the keys cut at a local locksmith place and they work fine. (I put the origional key in first then the new key and the car started.)
The remotes however, I have not programed yet. There has to be a way to program the new keyfobs without going to the dealer. Chasespeed 06-12-08, 08:56 PM Okay....
First... build date... 08/01. The RPO list is a friggin' mile long.
Second, I didnt pay retail for it. Let alone full retail.
Third, I am going through the manual... I cant find an option this thing DIDNT come with.....
Thanks for the input so far gents,
Chase chubbyranger 06-12-08, 11:07 PM :welcome: and nice score  This board will help you keep your sanity with these cars and save you big $$ from getting led around by dealers and shops. Chasespeed 06-13-08, 12:07 AM I havent seen a caddy dealer since.... well, I dont know. Pretty sure there isnt one here in Corpus Christi, most likely in San Antonio...
I was a wrench before the navy... so, its just model/brand specific stuff that will kill me....
Need to test the charging system, and the battery tomorrow. I know I am used to 2 batteries with my diesels(yes, I bought a caddy as an economic alternative to my 500 a month diesel bill), but, I killed the battery pretty easy(I think), today. I will play with it some more tomorrow, when I get off... test everything, etc...
THEN, hunt down some fobs.
And thanks for the help, and welcome so far...
Now to find a set of MagnaFlows so I can HEAR this thing run... cant spoil the neighbors TOO much with the Dizzle gone...
Chase submariner409 06-13-08, 07:51 AM You may not like the constant in-cabin drone of the Magnaflows. Go to www.corsaperformance.com (http://www.corsaperformance.com) and read a bit. Then begin a bit of eBay or online parts house searching. Chasespeed 06-13-08, 10:24 AM Believe me, if I had the 1300 to spend on the Corsa, I would.
Compared to my last truck, I am sure I wont notice any drone...but... its only temporary. Also looking at some Borlas, or and I think the Dynomax might be too loud...
Hard to tell.
Chase You can find the key fobs on ebay...they are numbered one and two...make sure you get one of each. They have key blanks too, any hardware store can dup/copy the existing key, but it has to be programmed, luckly w/o dealer intervention. The fobs can only be programmed with a Tec2 programmer. All GM dealers have the devices and some decent repair shops have them. Chasespeed 06-13-08, 11:17 AM The fobs arent model specific right?(new to caddies).
The main thing is the #1 and #2 right? Plus another key?
Thanks,
Chase Chasespeed 06-13-08, 11:25 AM More importantly, would these work. I dont see why, if they need to be programmed, that they wouldnt.
Just wanna make sure before I buy these things.

Thanks,
Chase submariner409 06-13-08, 12:47 PM Those are identical in shape to my '02 fobs, but the buttons are LOCK, UNLOCK, FUEL DOOR, TRUNK. I see no reason why the posted fobs can't be programmed for your car.
BTW, Take a quick look at the last 6 posts in "Differences between 2002 & 2003 STS" a couple of threads down in here.......more on key fobs. chubbyranger 06-13-08, 02:17 PM More importantly, would these work. I dont see why, if they need to be programmed, that they wouldnt.

The listing does not include compatability with Seville so I'd pass on those. If you buy them and they don't work the seller is unlikely to refund your purchase. My 99 remote has a gas door release instead of the panic button - not sure how long the remote was like that. Ya to all of the above... "Correct" Seville Fobs come up ALL of the time on the 'Bay... Fair price is around $15 including shipping... I scored one for $6 one time. Make sure you buy from someone who includes a picture of the actual fob you are buying... The buttons rub off, but the rubber buttons are easily swapped from a one fob to another.
Here is a nice one for ~$10.00

The fobs are fairly rugged but dropping them on concrete or into a hot tub can and will kill them (I know of this first hand)
The numbers on the back DON'T matter two #1 fobs can work as a Driver #1 and a Driver #2 fob as can two #2 fobs... Inside the #1 and #2 fobs are the same... The car sets which is one and which is two during the programming. Each fob has a "unique" frequency
The ONLY way to program these (on 98-04 Seville's) is at the DEALER... There is NO DIY method... Expect to pay about 30 minutes of book time (~$50) for this service. The dealer will need BOTH fob's to program when you get this done... One at a time won't work. Chasespeed 06-13-08, 04:24 PM SO, the FOB in the link above will work?
And, in my manual it mentions opening the fuel door with the FOB...
What a freakin PITA....
Gonna go smack someone around a little...
Oh well...
Chase mighty_quad4 06-13-08, 04:52 PM i dont understand, are you annoyed that the fob will open the fuel door? it takes the same effort as hitting the button under the dash. hell, i didnt even know where the fuel and trunk buttons were at in my STS for the first week i owned the car because i used the fob buttons. lol. :)
i made the mistake of buying my fob at the dealer and it cost me $110 there. they charged me $47 labor. for the money, they redid the fobs, keyed a new key to the vehicle which i also bought there, checked my air pressure, oil, trans fluid, and windshield washer fluid and adjusted as necessary. though the car didnt need anything, it was a nice touch and made the almost $200 bill for a KEY and a LITTLE KEY FOB seem a little less painful. i dont mind the cash for the time to do the fob, but the money for the part kinda hurt.
in addition to that, i met a really nice service tech there who was more than happy to chat Northstars with me. the best info i got from him was that he didnt see nearly as many 2000+ cars come thru needing HGs or engine replacement vs the previous Northstars. he did say that its thier policy to recommend replacement engines vs timeserts because of the timserts unknown lifespan in the car. im rabling now, sorry about that. submariner409 06-13-08, 06:20 PM Chase,
Underneath the headlight and Sentinel Control are two pushbuttons: one for the trunk and one for the gas door. They parallel the fob buttons and are activated by the Valet Switch in the glove box.
The trunk can be opened with a key and the gas door can also be opened by the pull lanyard in the left trunk hinge area. That makes 3 ways to open the gas door. Enough ????? Chasespeed 06-14-08, 02:18 AM I know about the buttons under the dash.
Got spoiled with my truck, and, with a 4 y/o, and 5 y/o, it would be all that much easier to tap a button, and get them in the car....
I dont care one way or the other about the damn fuel door on the fob.
The trunk, while being a nice thing, completely not needed......
I just wanna find something that will work, and for the best dollar, and make sure I get something compatible.
