I just bought a 2001 STS with 60k miles and when you are driving down the highway and hit a bump in the road it feels like the car wants to sway a little sideways and then it feels like it straightens out, dosen't do it all the time and on a smooth section of road you can't feel it at all. Did the bounce test on all corners and it seemed fine. The guy I bought it from had just had the front wheel bearings replaced, any ideas as what is wrong or is that how a touring car should perform, the suspension in general feels pretty firm.

I believe the 01 had a CVRSS (Constantly Variable Road Sensing Suspension (System) as stock. The ride will be considerably more firm than many think a Cadillac should be. BUT, it should track like it's on rails. If you can go down a pretty decent road at 40-50-60-70 and try to fishtail the car it should recover from aggressive maneuvers quickly and surely, with almost no trace of overshoot while correcting from a steering wheel flip left or right. If the rear "wallows" it's shock/strut or ride height control problems. If the front plows unduly or feels mushy, struts.

My ETC does the exact same thing. It's almost as if when you hit the bump or pothole a big hand is pushing tail end of the car sideways for a split second.
If it's a smooth road, it rides like it's on rails.
Have the alignment (4 wheel) checked as well as all the suspension bushings.
I would play with tire pressure adjustments; starting at 32 PSI front and 30 PSI rear.

imo, the rear shocks are damped incorrectly from the factory when there is no extra weight in the trunk. i think they are slightly over damped on the compression side.
fill the car's gas tank full, have a friend sit in the backseat and go over the bumps again. i betcha the tendancy will go away.

my 2000 Eldo did the exact same thing. i looked at the tires and they were JUST about the wear bar.. got them replaced with new tired all around and it fixed the problem.
so... check your tires and tire pressure

$75 give or take.

WOW -- That's a shock! Suspension bushings sound more expensive than that...
I was just talking about a 4 wheel alignment.
