This isn't exactly high tech but I thought I'd share anyway.
I threw the scantool on my 95 FWB a weekend or two ago and noticed my coolant temps were like 223° just driving down the highway. What was odd was that if I stepped on it and got the rpms up, the temp actually dropped a bit. Still, I figured it was sludged up. You know, lack of maintenance.
In anticipation of the hot streak we were about to endure (and now are enduring), I decided to at least swap out the thermostat Friday night in lieu of a flush, which I will do at a later date.
So I removed the gooseneck/stat housing from the water pump and this is what it looked like:

Wow that is clean!!! I didn't wipe anything out for the picture, either.
I put the new stat in (AC Delco of course) and what do you know - that WAS the problem.
Case in point: 85mph, A/C blasting, 90° and humid out - engine temp? 195°
Damn, you can't beat that.
Of course I WILL flush because maintaining a good performing system is JUST as important as fixing a poor performing one, despite some common opinions that "if it works, leave it alone."
