: where does this thing go (headgasket job)

Hey guys, my head gasket project is coming along nicely and I'm in the process of putting everything back together. The heads are on, along with the crossover and the exhaust manifolds. Timing is set as well.

Here is my questions, for the life of me I do not remember where this thing goes:

Here are some engine shots

So any ideas?

I can't believe noone has responded yet. Courtesy bump, as well as it looks like an exhaust shield, look around at the path the exhaust takes, specifically the crossover pipe.

I am thinking... looks like maybe it goes close to the EGR valve somewhere?
Hmmm... what year is this?
AJ might know off the top of his head if you can find him.

I was going to suggest the EGR heat shield, but wasn't sure enough.

I just spent some time looking and going through the 02 FSM. No joy.

It looks like some sort of shield or safety preventer to keep a pipe or hose from popping off a fitting.

It's awfully clean to have come from outside the engine unless you scrubbed it........

It is an exhaust heat shield that protects the vehicle speed sensor from the heat off the right/rear exhaust manifold. I bolts to the same bolts as the right/front brace between the transaxle and the engine. I can see in your 2nd engine pic where it goes. Let me know if you need some more help

I am pretty sure he's right. I think I do remember it going down there.

Yes it goes over the Trans output speed sensor.
That would be on a 98 Seville correct?

Back when I managed an aircraft engine overhaul shop, whenever we had an installation come in that we hadn't seen before we took many detailed pictures for just this very reason. It saved our bacon more than once.
