View Full Version : Do you think my tranny is on borrowed time?

It seems to be slipping some when I drive normal, if I put the peddel down, it shits good, but casual driving seems to slip a tad, especially when it downshifts coming to a stop, you can feel the downshifts.

Car has 112k on it.

94 fleetwood.

If so, how long at this point? what could give?

Should I drop a CPT tranny in? will it make my car a beast?

Typically it will slip in certain gear(s). Like 2 and 4, or lose gears. Often 4th is first to go. Then 2nd, eventually you will be left with first.

First, make sure the fluid/filter is good and ALWAYS pull the 1-2 accumulator and inspect and repair everytime you do a fluid filter swap (you DO do it every 30K right??) These are very prone to breakage, even the metal ones as well as the plastic ones. Get a new one and seal and spring and keep in your toolbox is my best advice. They go and often take the trans with it, for something soooo simple. Basically it takes the fluid for the 2-4 clutch apply and dumps it into the pan and you lose clutch holding pressure, and people just keep driving and lunch the tranny is very short order.

You could give Shane a call at CPT and talk to him, or PM 9C1Sherlock on ImpalaSSforum and get some advice, both are highly regarded guru's. I did a LOT of study on the 4L60E trying to hope their advice was not complete, it wasn't, they both were dead on. But I learned a lot and 9C1Sherlock was a great help. Also joecar on EFILive.com is also another great help.

I don't know how technical you are, but I have some info, but it is geared towards the tranny rebuilder not the casual mech... And transmissions aren't engines, they are nothing alike. You can be the worlds best on one and clueless on how to fix the other.

You can disconnect the trans connector on the transmission and drive it, it will only start in 3rd, but you will have max line pressure, see if once moving it will slip then. Does it slip if you shift manually?

I have not tried to shift it manually. I did just have the fluid changed around 300 miles ago. so just did it. but I dont think that part was changed, I guess I need to look into that!

the downshift is more pronounced then the upshift I would say.

I will try manually doing it today, should I manualy d/s also?

no, don't really need to, but fluid routing does change with manual shifting. In 94, it does bring up some modified PCM programming, in 95, most had manual mode disabled except maybe for first gear only. But in 94, L1 and L2 were manual mode shifting pattern.

Your described symptoms do not suggest there's a transmission problem.

I'd be real surprised if it shifts positively at high throttle but slips at part throttle, so I don't think there's a problem based on your description.

But certainly change the fluid and filter...

You had the fluid changed 300 miles ago? It might be late to ask but were there debris in the fluid? Sometimes that can tell you if you're trans is eating itself apart. I have a friend who had a '91 Cavelier (sp?) which only shifted properly using manual shifting... I'd +1 that and give that a try. All transmissions that I've had fail on me, it was usually just throttle shifts that slipped.

Worse case, get a free estimate from an automatic transmission mechanic and see if he sees anything fishy...

Any debris in the pan when it was changed?

I will ask the guy who did it, but I bet he would have told me if there was. so is it just normal to feel the up and downshifts, like that slight lurch on d/shift?

I dont feel the downshifts on my 96.
