When I bought the car the trunk lock area looked like this. Nice dirt outline and foam sticky stuff residue, which had turned into a rock-like substance.

91% isopropyl alcohol was able to take off the hardened foam tape after some elbow grease (and holding a soaked rag up to the stuff to let it break up) and some 3M fine compound took out the dirt outline of the wreath and crest. Paint came back substantially. I might have to do the entire car, or parts of it now. This surface of the trunk lid seemed especially dull for some reason.

I ended up with a used chrome crest as part of another parts order, so I guess I'll resell the gold one. I was going to polish the gold paint off but now I don't have to. To mount it I used the following hardware from home depot:
2 4mm x 16mm phillips head machine screws
2 4mm flat washers
2 4mm locking nuts (the interference kind)

I had to remove the license plate light but between that access and the two cutouts on either side of the trunk lock popper, I was able to get a hand in there to hold the back of the nuts with a 7mm socket on a small 1/4 drive ratchet while tightening it from the outside. Patience was a key feature in this adventure but I am proud to report there was NO dropping of any hardware into the trunk lid!
I still only have a gold wreath but it looks considerably easier to polish. All I really need is a buffing wheel and I think it wouldn't take long at all.
In other news, there's a spot on my rear bumper that looks like someone did a bad job scraping off a sticker and it left an imperfect surface. What's a good chrome polish?
