when I pulled my motor i could swear that there was a bumpout in the lower bellhousing for a starter to be mounted. anyone know what GM was thinking when they did this? i think the crossover pipe for the exhaust is right thru this area. the buick 3.8 motor has the crossover going over the trans. maybe it was a GM idea where they added a feature in the chance that it might be used in another car?

I have wondered that for years. Maybe a 4.9L, but the bell housing won't bolt up correct? The back bolt hole is off. Hmmmmmmm
