Update the navigation radio software.
Do not replace the navigation radio. Southern 05-28-08, 04:55 PM My, oh my.
So I won't have to write up my experiences with the NAV system while on my road trip at all.
(On my first report on the trip I described the GPS as "Crap". I recv two PMs suggesting I was being too harsh, despite the fact that I had not had a chance to elucidate the areas that failed. It seems appropriate as I suffered nearly all the bugs outlined here.)
Thank you GM!.....or Alpine as the case may be.
To all you folks who claimed that the GPS was Outstanding...............;) ngiardina 05-28-08, 05:08 PM So my car was built on the 16th, do you think they revised mine? I haven't had any problems yet. If there is a problem, should I have the dealer fix this when it goes in on Monday to fix the door seals? lordbaby 05-28-08, 05:08 PM luckily i have a portable GPS too The Tony Show 05-28-08, 05:15 PM Don't let mkaresh see this- Once he's aware that they're quickly addressing a known issue, he might have to revise his press release about how shitty GM quality is. Southern 05-28-08, 05:27 PM :yeah: Interesting,
The only possible bug I have noticed so far is a couple of times an active XM channel briefly showed up as "not available" however it was also fairly stormy on both of these occasions so I blamed this on weather conditions interrupting the satellite signal. I will check with the dealer's service department in a couple of weeks and see if they can identify when the new software was released and if mine needs the update.
I note that playlist up or down is a voice command option but with the Ipod selected the system then states invalid command. It would be nice if a software update added this control to the ipod! And I was accused of being unresonable!
At least GM is addressing it.....despite of many of the members of this board opinions that the NAV was perfect!
Now should we wait for a dealer call or make an appointment? Anybody knows? ngiardina 05-28-08, 09:09 PM I checked my software and it end in 019, does that mean I have the update? tazcaddy 05-28-08, 10:12 PM how do we check out software or is there a certain build date that this was address. My was built on 3/21. Do you go on line to get update or have to go to dealer or do they send CD? lordbaby 05-29-08, 12:19 AM does onstar has the most recent update.. sometimes when it didnt show i ask onstar.. if they dont have it they will ask you the nearest intersection or sth like that.. if they dont ask you, you better let them know.. I noticed today on my Nav/Radio when I touch a favorites button on the bottom of the touch screen, the radio will change to the new station but the screen will not display the new information as if the screen is frozen. No matter how many times I select a different favorites button the screen will not update it will still show that I am on the original station.
Also after I select a new favorite button the newly selected favorite button and the previous favorite button will stay illuminated it will get to the point where all the favorites accross the bottom of the display will be illuminated as if all are selected.
Anyone else have this problem ? Is this the fix? NJRonbo 05-31-08, 04:47 AM A lot of you asked some really good questions that no-one has
answered yet.
To reiterate....
1. What should we look for that indicates we need a software update?
2. Where do we find the software code on the NAV if this is the indicator?
3. Where do we find the build date (is it on the driver door?) if this is the indicator?
4. Does GM send us a firmware update CD or do we need to go to the dealer?
5. Are we going to be charged for this update or is it covered as a "bug fix?"
Thanks! mikem381 05-31-08, 10:06 AM Thanks, I have had some of the problems you list but on an intermittent level. The car is at the dealer for other issues now; I will ask that they update the software. Southern 05-31-08, 10:23 AM That's the only question that is germane.
Do you, or don't you have one to many of the problems listed?
If you do there is a fix.
If you don't, why would you waste the dealers time and possibly have somebody screw up a DL procedure n your car?
BTW The LAST thing I want to see is all those folks who told me that I was being too harsh on this NAV, that in fact it was the most wondrous thing about their caddy, to be in line ahead of me to get their wonderful NAV fixed.
Pretty obvious to me that some folk never left West Workington Falls but felt qualified to tell me just how great their NAV wqs........;)
I already have the Recalculating/no rerouting listed in my records.
I would HOPE that these problems don't have to be demostrable AFAIK they are all intermittent. Cadillac Tony 05-31-08, 10:23 AM A lot of you asked some really good questions that no-one has

To reiterate....
1. What should we look for that indicates we need a software update?
If your car exhibits one of these problems:
• Intermittent XM operation.
• Intermittent Timeshift operation.
• Intermittent music copy functionality.
• Intermittent blank display (no text, intermittent touch control).
• Incorrect dimming level (night dimming during day or day dimming at night).
• System stating it is unable to plan a route after a route deviation.
• System intermittently resets (shows Cadillac startup animation).
• System intermittently not showing low fuel warning.
2. Where do we find the software code on the NAV if this is the indicator?
3. Where do we find the build date (is it on the driver door?) if this is the indicator?
There's no need to do all this legwork yourself- if the car has one of the symptoms, simply take it to the dealer and tell them it's doing ________. They'll find the bulletin and update the software.
4. Does GM send us a firmware update CD or do we need to go to the dealer?
You'll need to take it to the dealer. Most software updates are done through a PC data cable connected to GM's server, while others are done with one "master disc" that the Dealer keeps for multiple uses.
5. Are we going to be charged for this update or is it covered as a "bug fix?"
There should be no charge. Just remember that many Dealers will get their feathers ruffled being "told" how to fix a car, so don't go in asking about the bulletin. Just describe the problem you're experiencing and they'll handle it. I'd also suggest that if you aren't having any issues, don't go in for an update "just because". If it's working fine, I like to leave well enough alone.
Thanks!
You're welcome! train55 06-01-08, 01:40 PM Thanks Tony :cool2: pharden 07-03-08, 07:03 AM I spoke with my dealer about some of the intermittent problems I was having with the nav/radio and was told unless it's having problems all the time there wasn't much they could do to fix it. When I take it in for an oil change I'll speak to them again about it. da_thrilla 07-03-08, 10:35 AM Does anyone know where on the sat nav screen am i supposed to see the low fuel warning?
or does it not show on the sat nav screen at all? bryson17 07-03-08, 11:00 AM When you get low on gas, the nav automatically asks you if you want to drive to the nearest gas station. I'm sure you have to have POIs. Do you have the POI function in europe? (Points of interest like hotels, gas stations, and restaurants). da_thrilla 07-03-08, 11:11 AM Yes we do :)
Thats odd...the Sat nav has never asked me such a questions and I always tend to drive around until the last drop... ngiardina 07-08-08, 08:30 PM When you get low on gas, the nav automatically asks you if you want to drive to the nearest gas station. I did not know that, I need to run my tank lower. That is effing cool. bobelew 07-08-08, 10:05 PM It does indeed work, but fortunately/unfortunetly this has only happened once. I usually don't let my fuel get that low, but it nice to know that it does work. It gave me several options by brand and all I had to do was push the button for which brand I wanted and it directed me to that station. Pretty cool! da_thrilla 07-09-08, 04:06 AM Does this message for gas refill come on after the DIC says low fuel? or around the same time? Ive noticed I have around 65km left to an empty tank when the DIC switches to "Low Fuel Range" bryson17 07-09-08, 07:50 AM I don't remember how exactly it worked. I just know that I was probably too low for comfort. I think I was trying to get 400 mi on the tank. Going back and looking at my fillups, I have one tank that I filled up 16.658 gallons on 399.4 miles. I guess I had almost a gallon and a half left in my tank, but it was in February and I haven't filled up more than 14 gallons since. ryannel2003 07-09-08, 09:52 AM I noticed today on my Nav/Radio when I touch a favorites button on the bottom of the touch screen, the radio will change to the new station but the screen will not display the new information as if the screen is frozen. We had an '08 CTS at my dealer with the same problem. I ended up turning off the car and restarting it again and it reset itself and started working again. Hopefully this software update will fix it. We've already had to replace to 2 Nav units due to loss in functionality. bobelew 07-10-08, 12:11 AM On my car, this happened long after the low fuel showed up in the DIC. I was driving along and all of a sudden the nav screen popped up with the warning showing the distance and direction towards the station of my choice. As I remember most of them were within 1 mile. When the screen popped up I just picked the station I wanted and it directed me to that station. I am going from memory becasue that happened within the first month that I had the car. I haven't let it get that low since. I don't like letting the fuel get that low, but it was cool just the same! I have had my new 2008 CTS with nav and bluetooth for a few weeks now. I have found that it will dial calls via voice input, and put the call on the car's speaker system, as it is supposed to do -- but only some of the time.
However, at other times, it will dial the call and then, when the phone starts to ring the number, I see a message on the nav screen saying, "CALL ENDED." In fact, though, the call has not ended. The cell phone has not dropped the call, and is still dialing the number. When the other party answers the call, I have to pick up the phone to talk.
Is this something that the new navigation radio software update will fix?
Has anyone else experienced this problem?
By the way, my phone is a Motorola Q, on Verizon. It is one of the phones that the GM bluetooth web site says is compatible with the CTS. I doubt that the update would correct the problem as your car probably came with the newer software. I suspect the problem has something to do with the Bluetooth connection itself. Try deleting your phone from the system and reinstalling it. If that doesn't do it, try a different phone. If the problem persists with a different phone, then there may be something wrong with the car's Bluetooth connection and you should get the dealer to fix it. clink54 08-01-08, 01:42 PM Does the update replace the non-qwerty keyboard with a normal qwerty one?
I have had several cars with Nav before the CTS, and I've never seen a worse Nav unit.
I really dislike this nav unit. It's my only complaint with my CTS. The_Judge 08-01-08, 01:53 PM Does the update replace the non-qwerty keyboard with a normal qwerty one?No, still an alphabetical keyboard, or at least that's what's in my car, which was build in mid-May and presumably has the latest version (it does have Bluetooth).
I don't agree about the NAV system. It's light years ahead of the system that was in my 2006 Mercedes CLS500, which was the same system in the 2008 E Class I looked at.
I find the large screen to be very easy to read, I particularly like the connection with XM Traffic, which has already saved me a great deal of time on the L.A. freeways. The only complaints I can think of are the alphabetical keyboard you mentioned and the poor quality of the voice synthesizer used to announce street names.
What don't you like about it that you think is better in other systems you've used? No, still an alphabetical keyboard, or at least that's what's in my car, which was build in mid-May and presumably has the latest version (it does have Bluetooth).

I agree that the Nav system is great. My friend has the 2008 Mercedes Nav system and he continually says how much better mine is than his. He's just ordered a BMW 335i (second car for him) and he hopes that its Nav system will be as good as the one in the CTS. clink54 08-05-08, 03:37 PM Ok, here's what I don't like:
Hate the non-qwerty keyboard
The touch screen is slow to respond to touch
Takes way too long to enter a destination
Can't enter anything while the car is in motion (My Acura Navs allowed this) as does TomTom
Voice commands are limited compared with other brands
What I like
Big screen
Calculates ETA based on average speed (The Acura used 55 as a default)
Traffic reroute via XM or Onstar
Stow away function
All in all this nav unit is behind the curve compared to the Japanese brands, and better than the German brands. greyghost04 08-07-08, 10:22 AM 08-08-44-019: Intermittent XM, Blank Display, System Resets, Timeshift Operation or Music Copy Functionality; Incorrect Dimming Level; System Stating Unable to Plan Route After a Route Deviation - (May 22, 2008)

I went to the dealer with some of the radio problems described above. The service writer had never heard about the above bulletin. When I got home I printed out the above post and sent it to him. 2 days later he calls me and says thank you very much for the letter. He had not seen this bulletin any where before, but it was real. He asked me to bring my car back in and would do the upgrade for me. So you see, sometimes we on this forum, do know more than the service shop. If you have a good shop, they will thank you for the help.
BTW, he said that after one year of ownership I will get a free map update.:cloud9: Cadillac Tony 08-07-08, 02:48 PM Can't enter anything while the car is in motion (My Acura Navs allowed this) as does TomTom
Try using the voice command "Street Address". That will allow you to verbally input a destination while in motion. greyghost04 08-07-08, 05:19 PM i use "enter street" and find that verbal address entry on the move works perfectly. The_Judge 08-08-08, 12:15 PM The trick that took me some time to discover is that you must press the voice button on the sterling wheel and wait for the beep for every entry it asks for -- street, city, street number, confirmation (i.e., selecting an entry from a numbered list that pops up), go, etc. That makes the process seem a little slow, but it works quite well. | |
