Your right, I saw that, but passed it over. Gold, black and white are the only colors I've seen them in. There is a deElagance listed on the same page in the same color.

IIRC, the Phaeton did not get operas until the last year, or at least until the latter part of the '78 model year. And that first Phaeton, the western saddle firemist one, has the trim cut off on the passenger front bumper. Wasn't it like that in a movie once? Could that be a movie car?

.......better ask Ben!

No, I don't think this is the movie car. In Goodfella's the car is a 1979 Phaeton, and this is clearly a '78 based on the grille. Also the color is different. I think it's Arizona Beige but I could be wrong, when the color in the movie is Western Saddle Firemist. Why do you think Ben has an almost identical replica?? Or if you're thinking of the movie Cookie, that one is a Western Saddle Firemist as well. Just an FYI, some of this information is from Ben's youtube Phaeton video.

Here's that '79 again. They advertize that they want a $145.00 prep fee. I don't think they can do that on an auctioned car. It's rough and they must think they can get more than the last bidding.

Damn, I've really got to check back more often! lol.

The first one belonged to a guy in queens named Joe, I talked to him through email a few times, and he tried to sell it to me. it just got relisted, so if it doesn't go this time, I might give him a call. and I noticed the rub strips too, but the car still wears the original paint with the saddle pinstripes, while the Phaeton used in Goodfellas & Cookie (same car) was repainted with light gold pinstripes... actually, it had the original paint in cookie, and was then redone for Goodfellas to look new enough to belong in 1980. Odd coincidence though.

That second one is pretty rare, I've only seen two other '78 Phaetons in that color. And yes, opera lights were added in very late '78.

Ben.

Well, That Phaeton from NY is listed again. This time there doesn't seem to be a reserve.

Did you know there was also a Phaeton in Ghostbusters 2?

Benzilla

Yep, actually it's the same one. The owner must have had it listed with an agency, three movies within two years. The way you can tell it's the same one is that the driver's side headlight bezel is broken, as you can see in this screen shot from Ghostbusters...

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c40/Cadillac_guy/912-1.jpg

...And in this screen from cookie. (better seen in the actual movie)

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c40/Cadillac_guy/cookie02it3.jpg

Then by the rub strips and other various details, you can tell it's the same one used in Goodfellas. They fixed the headlight before filming though. I've actually been looking closely at other movies made around that time in hopes of seeing it again.

Benzilla, I still have the 1978 4dr Arizona Beige Phaeton and it is still available. You'd be surprised how reasonable you can get it for. When was the last time you saw one? Did you ever see one? 904-388-8596

The phaetons are rare, although they do show up around here from time to time. There was one around here like the one on ebay. An older couple owned it. They had a local shop paint it over. Nice car, but the owner's needed attitude adjustments.
The other was an all black that was all original. The guy gave me a ride in it once. It had the CB radio, which seemed to be a common option for those cars. He said he would never sell it.
Over time, both these cars have disappeared from the local scene.

Not so long ago, there was a white one near me. Not sure which year it was but it was White with a navy blue canvas top. Nice car - at the time I had a mint 79 Coupe de Ville but always liked that top a little better than the light blue quarter vinyl top I had.

Well, the suspense is over. That Phaeton went for a little over $1,000. He should have given the previous high bidder a second chance option. He lost $400 on this auction. Hope the car went to someone who will appreciate it. Was our Ben in on the bidding?

New posting on ebay. Appears to be a printine example of a Phaeton.

Is this a real Phaeton for sure? I'm not overly familiar with the differences so I need some verification. I'm interested in bidding on this.

For all appearances, it's a Phaeton. Our resident expert, Benzilla, could could critique it for a more positive identification. If this is a conversion, it's a very good one. The blue dash is a question mark for me, but may have been available with the blue top.

lol, sorry I took so long. Yep, from all I can tell, it's definitely a Phaeton. If not, then it's an identical clone. But I very highly doubt it. That thing looks sweet, I'd go for it if I were you!

Not to scare you, but a mint Phaeton with 16k on it could easily go up to 8k with the right bidders, you might luck out though.

Heh, just noticed it's in Grand Rapids Michigan. I know the city well.

Okay guys, I'm a little slow here. What exactly is so special about the Phaetons? How are they different from the standard Coupe DeVille?

I'll let Ben answer that. I was in fact wondering about production numbers, so Ben, tell us the story.

Croly Hap! Somebody doesn't know what they have, that's by far the cheapest I've seen a set of those go for. And never in silver.

Why does it say 4.1L shouldn't that thing have the 425 in it?

Benzilla
10-10-08, 01:39 AM
Yeah, that's definitely a 425, 7.0 liter.. kind of a big slip up on the seller's part.

I love them. I had a 78 Coupe years ago. It was actually the car that turned me on to Cadillac. I was coming out of an 85 Givenchy Series Lincoln Continental going into a 78 Coupe. I thought I was going to be so upset.

Let's just say I haven't owned anything but Cadillac since.
