Went to get my nice new temperature gauge put in my 75, but it's a no-go as it seems the auto sparky could find no way to fit it. Only thing there was something that checks the head temperature. Tried first with an electrical gauge, and now with a mechanical one. Brasses me off, as I cannot stand that stupid, poxy, dumb-ass idea of an idiot light that tells you you've fried it.

Honestly, whoever came up with that bright idea needs a lead sleeping pill. :gun2:

If ANYONE out there has managed to successfully install a temp gauge in a 1975-76 era 500 (or similar with that RIDICULOUS light), could you pleeeeeeeze let me know how you did it.

Filled 'er up yesterday too - 71 litres = $146 Gets just over 200 miles. I've yet to take it on a long highway run though. Gas here has cracked $2/ litre, which equates to bang on US$6 a gallon.

Here's some pics from the GM Club's show in south Auckland yesterday

Did you have a problem finding a place for the gauge or the sensor? Not sure what spots are being used on you car, but there are two spots in the block that you can put a sensor... both are in the front.. one on the side just below the thermostat and the other right in the front below the A/C compressor.. the one below the compressor is a vacuume switch that stops vacuume to the vacumme advance on the distrubtor until the motor is up to temp...might not be working, many don't use it...
What is on my list of things to do is change the sensor on the idoit light.. like you said , the light don't come on until its too late...I got a sensor switch to relay on a elec fan at 212 F... now with a 180 degree thermostat and a good pump like I have talked about, I almost never go up to 200 degrees.. so with the light coming on at 212 gives me a chance to do something before its too late... I got the sensor, now its just doing it...the old sensor is not in the coolant jacket, the new one is...
I suggest you find one of these pumps and save it til you need it.. they are becoming harder to find.. in the past they were NAPA's best pump.. but this design has been discontinued.. ifyour lucky your local napa might have one left...vendors that specialize in these motors always have them, but for way more money...

It's the sensor I'm having problems with. The sparky mentioned something about the water jacket. When I get home tonight I'll put up pics of the area you're talking about, maybe that'll help pinpoint where the sensor can go.

At least finding where to put the gauge is dead easy..........

BTW, there's no local NAPA's here....I'm in New Zealand.

Wooo-hoooo!!!! Got both oil pressure and water temp gauges in yesterday - much better! Went to a place across the road from work instead (the guy who did the job is a former GM employee from MA), so he knows these cars well.

Oil pressure one was fairly easy, water temp was a mongrel as it was buried at the bottom of the block, by the starter motor apparently. Works well though. Temp hits a high of 182-ish, oil at about 33psi.
