OK I need the gurus on this board to give suggestions.

I had that axle replaced and the rear wheel bearings replaced and the wheel cyl replaced and rear brakes. well I have been noticing when I apply my brakes to come to a stop, i hear a racket from that side it sounds like.

It is only when i apply the brakes and it sounds like it is in perfect rhythm, like it is happening the same place on every rotation of the tire, as its coming to a stop.

kinda like a clack sound, clack....clack....clack....clack. it is diffidently fairly loud.

I have been meaning to get it back to the shop cuz It has to be from the work that was done. I took the wheel off and my untrained eyes did not see anything that stood out as weird.

Any idea? thanks.

Put it up on jackstands, and get down where you can listen to it. Take the rear wheels off. Have someone put it in drive, then release the brakes so the drums get going. BE CAREFUL! Don't get near the drums and the driveshaft. Have the driver apply the brakes and see if you can hear the noise. If yes, turn the car off, and pull the drums. Do the same thing (start, drive) but no braking this time (your drums are off). Just turn the car off to stop the axles turning, and put it back in park.

I think that one of the springs inside the drum is rubbing on the drum. Once you get the drums off, I bet you find the answer...

Jay,

So if i tok the drum off would I see any scuffing on the inside or any sign of something hitting? could the drum need re surfacing?
Would the spring only rub when the brakes are applied then, that is when I only hear the sound. braking.

You could also try lubing the contact points on the backing plate where the brake shoes contact. You are supposed to do that when you do a brake job. If the shoe was binding then releasing, it might make that noise...

Dod you try to listen with the car up in the air with everything turning in drive?

No I have no jacks or another person to help, Moday though I want to try that.
So where do I lube and with what?

The noise can be pretty loud, especially when the windows are down.
its like a clack or CLUNK sound kinda, definitely the same place on the wheels rotation though. as it starts fast as the wheels turning faster and gradually slows untill its once every fast second, before coming to a stop. so it has to do with the wheels speed and something is making contact.

Also, we noticed a little drip coming from the "coupling" area where the drive shaft goes into the rear diff? but that has stopped now, many its to low to drip. what is that all about?

Thanks Jay for the help.

Once you have the drum off, you will see where the shoe contacts the backing plate. You have to lube those points with high temp grease. Ideally, you remove the shoes to do it, but you might be able to pry them up a bit with a screwdriver to get a bit of grease back there with something like a Q tip. Don't get any on the friction surface of the shoes, or they will be useless.

Any chance the lugnuts were/are loose? Could be a bad u joint on the driveshaft, too.

If your rear end has leaked enough to be low on lube, you could be hearing noise from something damaged in there. To check the level, you take out a plug on the side of the housing, and stick your pinky in and down. If you don't touch lube, it is low, and that is bad. It comes in a bottle that you squirt in that hole until it starts to spill out. Fill it up. It takes 80w90 gear lube, if I remember correctly (I have two bottles in the garage that I will check for you).

Here's where the fill plug is that you need to check:

If you can, head over to Wal Mart or a parts place and pick up a pair of jack stands. You will wonder how you ever got along without them. You can use your stock jack one side at a time (but that sucks). Often, places have package deals on a small 2 ton jack with a pair of jack stands. Pretty much a must have for working on cars...

The leak was not coming from right at the "pumpkin" but at that seam or close to it in that pic you just posted, close to the driveshaft/pumpkin joint.

The noise only happens when on the brakes though, so wouldn't that rule out the diff?

I will also check the fluid level as well. thank you.
