View Full Version : Time, Heat, and Pressure or Sunroof Vandalizm? tenmark 05-23-08, 02:01 PM http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd251/tenmark262/DSCN7270-1.jpg
Woke up this morning and found my sunroof is all busted up. Vandals or does this just happen overnight?
Sorry about the typo - vandalism vs vandalizm
shizm my dizzy dizm baby!!! tenmark 05-23-08, 02:10 PM Any tips or tricks to help me keep it together - I'm thinking duck tape on the inside. It doesn't look too strong. And don't want it coming down on me - just opening and closing the door moves it up and down. It's ready to rock apart. And am afraid it might could leak too.

http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd251/tenmark262/DSCN7598.jpg Dangit man! That sucks. I saw someone use duck tape on a rear window that did that and it seeme to work well enought to keep it together until they could get it fixed. caddycruiser 05-23-08, 06:15 PM Were there any bizarre temperature changes overnight? Not that glass would crack with that, but wow, weird. Must have been hit by something or someone, but who knows what.
I too would try tape (though the pictures make it look dirty rather than broken...I assume it's shattered all around?), too, carefully. Otherwise, just do plastic overtop, and taped down completely around the roof on top, to prevent any moisture getting in. Tape residue won't do anything to the paint, for the short-term, but will keep wet out.
Then it comes to getting a replacement panel. It's essentially bolted in, and is that the GM OEM Astroroof (versus one of many aftermarket sliders)? If so, could locate a used glass or new, if there's still one in stock somewhere.
For OEM, the part numbers:
-Without vinyl roof: 12371674
-With vinyl roof: 12518275
List is a bit over $630 for no vinyl, with some online GM parts places listing it for around under $500, but would have to check if it's actually available or not.

Used are less, and out there, just comes down to finding one.
What a weird thing to happen! tenmark 05-23-08, 07:25 PM Thanks Caddycruiser. Temps have been about the same here in Orlando. Reporting officer took some prints and said there was another officer in the neighborhood that wanted to talk with her after she was done with me. Maybe there were other complaints. I dunno.
Made another trip to the junkyard and pulled two sunroofs from 94 and 95 Sevilles that more or less measured the same (it was buy one get one free day!) and for $12.88 my problems were solved. And I've got an extra if it happens again. I just couldn't drive around with it like that and though I had already been to the junkyard this morning working on that whole Buick A/C control project I went back again. Actually, it took four attempts to get two sunroofs as it was pretty easy to strip the bolts holding it in. Nearly got one out but the last one stripped - so I wrestled it out bending the one flange holding it in until it gave. And smashed that one. Let me tell you, it's not easy to break them. I threw it from the roof and stomped on it a few times before it finally shattered. Whatever broke mine had to have some serious force.
Long story short, a sad story with a happy ending.

Not relevant, but took a pic of the Roadmaster A/C controls with Caddy display coloring!!

When I am at my mother's place in Ft Lauderdale, I always spend an afternoon there. The prices are crazy cheap. If I lived there, I would go by twice a week. tenmark 05-23-08, 08:21 PM Oh yea, lots of FWBs down there too!!
And "Florida Fresh" cars are so much easier to work on. caddycruiser 05-23-08, 09:52 PM Great, and from reading, nice to see the OEM Seville/Eldo/etc. roof is a match. Quick and cheap fix for you:thumbsup:
Weird that vandals would just strike a sunroof...but vandals are vandals and I don't doubt it for a SECOND. Is the sunroof glass laminated like the windshield? I am having trouble making out the fact that it's smashed in the first images. I see a clear difference with the fixed images, but it just looks like dirt to me. Weird. tenmark 05-23-08, 11:19 PM Yea, it looks to be tempered safety glass just like the windshield, Kev. Broke up into thousands of pieces all delicately sandwiched between the laminate. Check the better pics below.
Had the police out again tonight after learning someone tried to do the same thing to my wife's car last night too which was parked beside my Caddy. I hadn't even checked her car until after I had my sunroof in. No damage to the sunroof itself but there's a dent on the roof near the corner of the sunroof - looks like they missed. My local investigator said it was a strange situation. Hadn't seen anything like that before - usually vandalism tends to be quieter acts of violence (like keying a car) and the damage worse. He did mention it may be car thieves testing for alarms - which is scary. And asked if I have any enemies or anyone I've crossed. I don't. Had a bit of a falling out with a friend a few months ago but I seriously doubt he did it.
Of course, at times like this, with a heightened sense of awareness you begin to think and rethink everything.
The only thing that made sense, at least to me, is what he said about car thieves. It could be someone was testing (pretesting) for an alarm or security system. Because if they're going to steal it, they're not wanting to do lots of damage.
Well, it could be this or could be that. I dunno. Just hope it's behind me. Going to live with the dent on the Honda.
