Hi, my friend has a '79 Deville with the thermometer on the drivers side. It appears to be broken, or stuck because it always reads "110" degrees. Now I have seen ones on ebay like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Rare-OEM-71-80-Cadillac-Door-Mirror-Thermometer-NICE_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33649QQihZ011QQite mZ320254656116QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

My question is, if I buy another one, is there a way to put it in for him? I don't see any screws to take the old one out. He is afraid he'll have to buy a whole new mirror. But then again, I guess if just the thermometer is available there is some way to take them in and out without getting a whole new mirror...

Thanks

I have one on one of my Coupes. Have never touched it and am not even sure it works. There are not a lot available, and you don't see them on ebay too often. As old as they are now, probably not many are operable.
You have to get the whole enchillada. They are a special part integrated to the mirror stem. I think you would have to remove the mirror to service it.

These thermometers work via a spring that expands and contracts according to ambient temp. Replacement is actually very easy. Get a screwdriver, place the head in the hole at the front of the thermometer housing in the mirror base, and gently tap the other end of the screwdriver with a hammer. The thermometer should pop out. You can then either try to fix it or just replace it. Any thermometer from the years they were offered (1971? to 1984?) should work. The only difference is that the older ones are white on black and the newer ones are black on white. Oh, and don't forget to hook up the fiber optic cable again so it lights up at night.
