View Full Version : Why did you decide on the CTS and not the STS?

I have been comparing the CTS with the STS. I am finding that sales of STS's have been dropping during recent years and as a result Cadillac is offering rebates and many dealers are being very aggressive with their pricing.

From the exterior the STS and the CTS look similar. The STS looks like a good buy.

Why did you perfer the CTS and not take advantage of the agressive pricing dealers are offering on a new STS?

personally, i have an 08 CTS and my father has an 06 STS.. this probaly isn't true but to me, the interior of the STS just feels more 'old man-ish' (don't hate me, i love the car).. the CTS to me just feels more modern and youthful.. you gotta remember, i'm only 23 years old.. STS is definitely a nice car, i believe next year is the last year they are making it..

Here is one of the best reasons why. Best interior available for $40000

To me, both cars had pros and cons. Overall, I think I would have bought the STS, but the residuals on the lease made the STS about $100 a month more even with all the incentives. I really worked the numbers hard, but could not get a STS where I wanted on a lease.

I second the motion on that ebony interior! The CTS is more agile and responsive than the STS because of the shorter size.

I looked at an STS about a year ago before the current generation CTS was available because with a sunroof the prior generation CTS did not have enough headroom for me. After seeing photos of the new CTS I clearly preferred it for style and at 6'2" there is plenty of room in the current generation CTS. I am extremely happy with mine (Black Cherry with ebony, PDQ) and I am very happy I got it instead of the STS.

However, others will prefer the style and features of the STS (or other vehicles) and that is the right choice for them. It seems that some people are so self-confident (or perhaps self-centered) that they cannot imagine anyone disagreeing with their personal choice of vehicles. However, think of the number of hours you are going to spend in your new car and choose the one you like best because as a wise man once said the only person really looking out for your happiness is you!

Even though I like the STS, I didn't consider buying the STS for a second. It was about the looks of the CTS not the price.

To me, the looks of the CTS are more aggressive, youthful, full of vigor. The STS looks more dated, less youthful .... I assume that the STS will be getting an updated design soon, similar to the CTS ?

For me it was the little things in the CTS - the light tubes in the headlamp housing with Perf Pkg, the Ultraview Sunroof, the agressive front and rear end, and - of course the interior. I like gadgets and looks overall. Don't get me wrong, the STS is a great car, but it just never seemed to take off as the CTS did. Now, if we are talking a STS-V........:D

First, I do agree with you on the looks of the CTS - for two cars with such similar overall styling, the bulged fenders sure make a big difference.

Second, it has already been stated by Cadillac that they are currently working on a new car that will replace the STS & DTS as one. No doubt it will be sized between the current STS & DTS. Probably a good idea as I'm the first to admit that the CTS probably put the final bullet in the life of the current STS.

I looked at, and drove, both the CTS and the STS. I actually slightly prefer the exterior look of the STS, but the CTS interior won me over. I bought the CTS, and I haven't regretted it. It's a great overall car. Who knows, maybe when they do make-over the STS I'll be ready for a trade.

I have an STS and my fiance has the CTS. After driving both for a little while now, I have to admit that I'm really jealous of my fiance! I think if you younger you should go for the CTS. The interior is world class and the features and capabilities of the Nav system are endless.

CTS is great if you like high tech toys and love watching your friend scream and grab onto the 'Oh Sh*t' handles
STS is great if you like taking it easy and cruising comfortably

Do not under estimate the STS though, I got my Northstar RWD to do this w/o a problem

I wasn't in the market. Then Kate Walsh piqued my curiosity. It sorta looked like the normal CTs.....but there was something else..was it the grill.....? I certainly was not sufficiently moved to buy a Gen 1.
So, harboring a desire to buy American, and an old desire to own a new Cadillac, I visited the Caddy dealer and was blown away.
But - I really felt like I should check out the competition before I plunked down <>$45.000 for a car I didn't "need".
So I would test drive a Infiniti, and the test drive aCTS, then a Mercedesand then a CTS, then a BMW and then a CTS (The 335 is an amazing machine), In the end, I wrote the check for the car that blew the Gseries away, was far superior to the 3000/3500, and had more "balance" than the Bimmer.........

I have had zero defects and love this car!
The STS?
Geeze I wanted a NEW car.........

There is a Black/Grey STS-V at a CarMax near me. It's on 06 with 17k miles w/navi. It's been thru a couple of CarMax locations here because I keep seeing it at different locations with the "last chance" banner on the pictures. They have knocked almost $10k off the price over the last 5 months. The price is down to $42.5k

Now what would you do?
469 HP AND it already has bluetooth....

I actually had the chance to lease a 2008 STS at a FAR CHEAPER rate than
the CTS. There was a demo model with 80-100 miles on it and the dealership
was anxious to sell.

I test drove the STS and found it to be a smoother, more comfortable ride than the CTS.

However, with the STS, there was this feeling of driving an "old man" car.

The CTS beats the STS hands down in style and youth attraction.

Of course, with the STS about to be revamped, we may all be envious of
what is yet to come in that product line.

I think this is actually an interesting question for cadillac. I am 37 yrs old and honestly would never have considered a Cadillac before the CTS. Now that I have experienced Cadillac I would be thrilled to continue as a Cadillac owner. Just like BMW owners often upgrade from a 3 series to a 5 series or beyond, I would certainly be willing to move to a larger STS when I am looking for a new vehicle. That being said, I think the onus is on GM to offer a car that carries on the spirit of the CTS to the STS. They have a legit winner with the CTS and they need to transfer those qualities across the brand.

Of course, I am sure there are many who are thrilled with the STS the way it is. To each his/her own.

The STS is a fine vehicle yet the styling on the new CTS really caught my eye.

I'd buy a CTS again in a heartbeat.

Good luck deciding.

I did an in depth comparison of the two with the V6 before I ordered my CTS. With similar equipment, the CTS was almost $5,000 less expensive (GMS). The significant differences were, the STS has Bluetooth, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, more rear legroom, a larger trunk and rides a little softer. The CTS has the HDD, USB port, more modern interior and a more aggressive looking exterior. One of the reasons I considered the STS was because I like the HUD on my Corvette, and would have liked it on the STS. But to get the HUD, you needed to order the performance package that also had the lane departure warning, blind zone alert and adaptive cruise control for an additional $5,000. I didn't need the HUD that much. Besides, I liked having the first 2008 CTS in the area.

I was in a friend's company-provided STS last weekend. The dash looked like an old Buick compared to my CTS.

100%!
The interior of the STS looks like the exact reason that "detroit interior" is a derogatory term.
Nuthin special at all, but neither is the 1st gen CTS, maybe the next STS will poop all over the current CTS

I think it has to. It would be a huge let down for the styling from the CTS not to trickle to the rest of the line...

Then again, Caddy might have an entire different idea for the audience they want with the STS, but I dont think so.

Speaking of trickling town the rest of the caddy lineup, this better not be the actual interior of the 09 xlr:

Leftlane better be wrong in this case. I really hope they update it more than that, the interior looks a lot like the interior of the xlr now. I hope they CTSify it at least to some degree.

There's a lot going on in this thread! First, the STS is slowly dying, and will be discontinued. The XLR was considered the GM "halo" car. Now, the CTS is stepping up to the plate, with a myriad of enhancements. Like most things, it's all about the money. The car that brings Cadillac the most revenue will get the most attention from the design engineers after the marketing guys have their say. The new CTS interior is a winner, by all the reviews I've seen. But the real litmus test is what YOU think when you compare vehicles and take that initial test drive. The STS was really nice when it first appeared, (-especially when compared to its CTS sibling) but I tend to agree with a lot of what the previous entries to this thread say, "It looks like an old man's car." Not agressive, but refined. The CTS appeals to a younger demographic, but I see plenty of blue-hairs and silver-backs like me driving them too, which is a great testimonial that GM is moving forward. The XLR's sales continue to decline, while the price keeps rising! With very few "refreshments" so far, the car needs an interior makeover right away. The '09 pictures of the test mule show a new leather-covered dash. . . . XLR production is just over 1100 vehicles this year (a 75% drop from previous years.) I saw a base model XLR at the dealer Monday for $90k! I wish them well on that one.

So to make a long story short, the CTS get my vote over the STS. Great bang for the buck.

I started this thread to give me guidance on selecting the CTS or the STS.

FROM WHAT EVERYONE HAS POSTED I HAVE CONCLUDED TO BUY A NEW CTS.

Although the two cars are similar starting in 2008, I have noticed that even the 2008 STS's have very low resale value. You will find dealers selling 2008 used STS's with under 1000 miles in the $35,000 - $38,000 price range. These are cars with an MSRP in the low $50's. When asking these same dealers if they have any CTS's there response is YES, but their prices on a low mileage 2008 CTS's is almost as much as a brand new 2008 CTS.

In summary I feel that the STS is a car that is on its way out with poor future resalability. If someone wants a good car cheap buy a used, STS, but if you want a new car buy a CTS which I believe will hold it resale value.

I should however point out that you can also purchase a used 2003 - 2007 first generation CTS at a great price as well. Just as soon as the 2008 came out resale values on these cars came down like a rocket. I think the lesson to be learned when buying a new car is to stay away from a car that in short order will be redesigned or discontinued. Once the redesigned model hits the value of your car will sink but fast.

Do the rest of you agree or not?

That looks to me like something from the parts bin. Maybe they just threw some parts together to make the prototype driveable while they work on the interior.
