Surf vs. Escalade: Surf almost wins when man drives SUV onto beach
Cadillac becomes mired in sand when man drives to shore to watch sunrise.

SAN CLEMENTE – A few minutes longer, and it would have been the priciest surfboard on the beach.

Waves nearly washed away a luxury SUV parked on the beach after the car got stuck in the sand and the rising surf began pounding the car, authorities said.

Waves reached up to the vehicle's mirrors, but when deputies from the Orange County Sheriff's Department arrived at the scene this morning, the driver of the car was refusing to get out of the car and leave behind the 2008 Cadillac Escalade, said Lt. Ted Boyne.

"The waves were about to roll the car over," Boyne said.

Deputies arrived at the beach, near Coronado Lane and Avenida Victoria, just after 5 a.m. after receiving a call of a car stuck in the sand. Deputies arrived to find 32-year-old Payam Sabo inside the new SUV, completely surrounded by salt water.

Deputies convinced Sabo to get out of the car, pointing out to the Irvine resident that the waves appeared to be strong enough to tip the car over, Boyne said.

"Maybe he didn't want to leave his 2008 Cadillac Escalade behind," he said.

That's some dedication to the brand.

Authorities called a heavy-duty tow truck to the scene, about 100 yards north from the pier, to get the car out of the sand.

The car, with a ticket price of more than $56,000, was impounded. Water had damaged the car and it wasn't working.

Sabo told authorities that he had driven the car onto the beach to watch the sunrise, but he realized the car was stuck in the sand when the surf began to rise.

Deputies issued Sabo a citation for driving on the beach, and he was handed a Department of Motor Vehicle license re-examination form, which must be completed within five days, Boyne said.

Although Sabo did not appear to be impaired or intoxicated, he appeared to be confused, Boyne said.

Confused: I paid $56k for a truck that can't go off-road?!

He might as well just sit there and watch his $56,000 get washed out to sea.... Because there ain't no way insurance is paying out on that stupid SOB.

Haha. I love the world we live in.

I was working service desk the other day and some lady came in to return some stuff. The difference she was getting back was $.03 less than what she paid. I explained to her that she bought the stuff 3 months ago and the tax had changed since. She waited 15 minutes for my manager to show up and she said the exact same thing I said. She continued arguing with my manager for about 5 minutes at which point my manager just walked away with the customer still yelling at her. All this over 3 friggin cents.
