View Full Version : 08 CTS Experience I got my new 08 CTS on April 3rd. It was an ordered car and I had to wait 8 weeks to get it. I have every option available including the FE2 suspension all wheel drive and the high polish 18" wheels. I now have 2800 miles on the car. I get 20 mpg in town and 26 mpg on the highway. I must tell you that I have had absolutely no problems whatsoever with the car. It is extremely comfortable, handles like a dream and almost matches the cornering ability of my 2000 Corvette C5 convertible. I have been on this web site for about 5 months now reading the postings and reading all the complaints about one thing and another. Either I am extremely lucky or Cadillac is now making one hell of a car. The only thing I regret is that I don't have the blue tooth as my car was made just before it was made standard equipment. My car listed for $49,875 and I bought it for $44M and change. I thought that the deal was good and the dealer experience was excellent.
Paul Nowak proexpert 05-19-08, 12:52 PM We also love our fully loaded CTS. Congratulations to Cadillac on building a great car. I got my new 08 CTS on April 3rd. Congrats. Although you definitely could have done better on the price. If it listed for $49,875, I wouldn't have paid any more than that. Paying $44M is just a ridiculous mark up for a car. Did you atleast get any extras thrown in for the extra cash? :lildevil: Welcome, Congrats and Bummer,
We were not supposed to built any perfect ones.................. Me, too; my CTS4 is the best car I've ever driven. I'm sorry for those who post 'horror stories' about their experiences with the CTS; as I've posted before, ANY car from ANY manufacturer can, and do, have problems from time to time. I think Cadillac is making major strides to improve the quality of their cars (and, I think a very recent J.D. Power survey recognizes that). doncrystalred 05-19-08, 07:02 PM Me, too; my CTS4 is the best car I've ever driven. Don't let mkaresh and 928s read this! J.D. Power doesn't agree with their "survey".
I too have had my CTS since March...only a thousand miles on it so far, but no problems whatsoever. Took a 200 mile round trip to Phoenix last week and got 26.6 MPG using actual miles and actual gallons to fill. DIC said I got 26.8 MPG so it isn't off by a lot. Congratulations to all you guys who have new CTS's and the "good news" stories to go along with them. I've been reading all of the horror stories in this forum and was beginning to waiver on my decision to order a new CTS Coupe when they're available in 2009. I was starting to think that maybe I should wait until they get all the bugs out of the coupe the way they've been doing on the sedan. After reading these raive reviews I'm convinced that the CTS, both sedan and the upcoming coupe are quality, luxury cars of the old Cadillac tradition. Thanks again.
P.S. Placing an M after a number indicates thousands not millions. Just thought I'd let you know. dkozloski 05-19-08, 07:24 PM Congratulations to all you guys who have new CTS's and the "good news" stories to go along with them. Thousands =K
Millions=M
Billions=B
Are you smarter than a fifth grader? Thousands =K
Millions=M
Billions=B
Are you smarter than a fifth grader?
OK, let's not get into a pissing contest, M is the Roman abbreviation for 1000 which is used in most formal financial discussions of dollars as in accounting and banking. Now, I am aware of the car ads which run in the newspapers which show 50K for mileage or price. So let's just say either will work. But one shouldn't be criticized for using the other.

Two quick points:
1. I'm not affiliated with Michael Karesh's TrueDelta. It's his, not "their" survey.
2. As far as I know, the 2008 Cadillac CTS is not included in any J. D. Power Survey report.
The most recent J. D. Power Initial Quality Study released in June of 2007...
[see below - Cadillac owners reported 135 problems vs. the Industry Average of 125 problems per 100 cars in the first 90 days of ownership, placing Cadillac in the bottom one-third at #25 of 35 nameplates]
... obviously did not include the 2008 CTS. This model will be included in the 2008 IQS report due out next month, and its score released only if the CTS ranks above the industry average.
http://www.jdpower.com/corporate/news/releases/charts/2007088a.GIF The J.D. Power Initial Quality survey that 928S quoted was pretty discouraging, I agree. Notice the rankings for BMW, Acura, and Audi were in the same ballpark. Although looks like Mercedes is finally getting their act together...
However, to be fair and balanced, the 2007 J.D. Power Quality survey after 3 years of ownership places Cadillac in second place, just behind Lexus and Buick who were tied for first. It is odd to have such a disparity between surveys...the truth probably lies somewhere in between. Southern 05-19-08, 11:03 PM There really is no correlation between Initial Quality (90 day infant mortality and adjustments) and Reliabilty (3 year). The need for initial adjustments on a new product is just about as predictive of long-term reliability as the experience of dating a high school cheerleader is predictive of what long-term marriage will be like with this same individual.
Another problem with many quality assessments is within consumers' minds product quality versus preference for specific features/styles is often muddled at best. lepidium93514 05-20-08, 10:07 AM I also love my CTS, and it has by far been the best vehicle I have ever owned so far. I have had some minor problems, but that's all they were, minor. Congrats on your car! The J.D. Power Initial Quality survey that 928S quoted was pretty discouraging, I agree. Notice the rankings for BMW, Acura, and Audi were in the same ballpark. Although looks like Mercedes is finally getting their act together...

Here's what J. D. Power's Neal Oddes, Director of Product Research and Analysis, said about the correlation between initial quality and longterm dependibility (press release, Aug 9, 2007):
"Automakers may reap numerous benefits from producing dependable vehicles—not only in higher residual values, decreased warranty costs and opportunities for remarketing their vehicles, but also in higher customer satisfaction and increased likelihood of customers recommending or purchasing newer dependable models. This is why it is especially important for automakers to successfully launch new vehicle models with high initial quality and appeal—models that perform well in these regards tend to exhibit particularly strong dependability later in their life cycle."
If Oddes is correct, then the disparity between GM/Cadillac's above-average 2007 Dependability rank (#3 of 38) and its below-average 2007 Initial Quality rank (#25 of 35) may signal a change for better or more likely worse - it's too early to tell. [In contrast, rival Toyota's premium Lexus brand recorded no such disparity between its 2007 Dependability rank (tied #1 of 38) and its 2007 Initial Quality rank (#2 of 35)]
Only time will tell. carterb 05-26-08, 07:20 PM I have had my car now for over 2 months and 2.5k miles, and the only issue I had was the body rumble which was resolved earlier with the driveshaft indexing adjustment (another post). Otherwise, I agree, what a car ! :thumbsup: carterb 05-26-08, 07:26 PM Two quick points:

http://www.jdpower.com/corporate/news/releases/charts/2007088a.GIF I can't believe that Cadillac is showing higher than Pontiac - my previous Pontiac was one of the most troublesome vehicles ever owned ! :hmm: Southern 05-26-08, 08:04 PM Here's the problem.
For the moment lets not worry about the fact that their is NO comparison between the 2007 and the 2008 CTS. None.
With a bumper to bumper warranty, with an expensive car, people expect perfection.
For one thing, they are being lied to by their neighbors who are driving Toyotas and don't want to tell you about the fires under the hood, the sludged engines, and all the recalls.
So they bring it in for everything.
Everything.
Many people also have buyers remorse.
That is they think like victims. You see a LOT of that around here.
A Lot.
When it comes to 3 year reliability, it is what it is.
And frankly, I don't care what Oddes says, there is NO connection between IQ and 3 year.
The vehicle may squeak when it is 3 years old, but so what? The owner is not going to pay for a mechanic to spend hours searching for it.
Besides, while squeaks and rattles make up a significant percentage of IQ, it has nothing to do with reliability. Nothing.
I think that the CTS is pretty normal for a "new" car.
I should know, I have driven many "new" cars as I like to be in the vanguard.
My other car was a Murano.
In 2003.
I had 6 trips to the dealer in the first 6 months.
Where the hell was that vaunted Japanese Quality?
It was in my friends lying eyes, that's where.
I have now had my car for 4 months and <> 4000 miles.
I have some issues with the car, but they are not IQ or reliability.
Some of the decisions that were made, I feel were not made properly.
I will elucidate more on some of these when I finally return home from this driving trip.
They include a really crappy GPS (That does do some things very well!), seats from hell, and I may have an alignment problem.
The car's steering does not self center.
So, although I absolutely hate the car every day after 6 to 8 hours in the saddle, I love it on days
that I only drive it 3 or 4 hours.
It will be interesting to see what the IQ numbers are for the 08 thru JD powers.
Michaels numbers seemed excessive and I think there are serious questions about the methodology, but still they indicate a problem.
I, and no one else here, is in a position to say what the acual IQ is of the 2008 CTS.
There have probably been 50,000+ sold and while we see 14-15-16 people with vibration issues, the question remains, does GM see 5000+ CTS with vibration issues?
Lets face it, if GM sees 1000 out of 50000 with vibration issues (and there appears to be several causes) then it could hardly be classified as a major problem.
Some of the annoying electrical problems are shared with many other cars, like BMW.
Doesn't make it right, but don't come on here tryingto blow smoke up our butts about
the "perfect"BMWs......MBs....Toyptas......Acuras.....Hindas... ...etc.........
The CTS is a fine car.
It has limitations and it is a first year car.
In my experience the best one will be the 2010. So, although I absolutely hate the car every day after 6 to 8 hours in the saddle, I love it on days

Interesting comment on the seats Southern. I will be doing a 1 day ~800 mile drive to the MS gulf coast in a couple of weeks so it will be interesting to see how I feel by the end of the day. I may be stopping to stretch more often than I planned.
The bad part of this trip is the worst road (US-49 from Jackson to Gulfport) is at the tail end of the day. 49 has always been famous for HUA drivers pulling out at 10 miles per hour in front of traffic. lewisforjesus 05-26-08, 11:40 PM Here's the problem.

Southern, I guess it depends on things like how you're made or what you're used to. My wife and I drove from Denver to OKC (about a 12 hour day) and we were both very comfortable(we didn't have the power lumbar in the rental). Of course we are used to that 345k mile Prizm. We are 50 & 51 years of age(or does that have anything to do with it ? Again Southern, I enjoy reading your replies. Lewis | |
