White smoke is now coming from the exhaust ONLY when I WOT. I was talking to my car buddies and they said it sounds like a blown head gasket. its been happening for 1,000 miles plus and I have NO loss in power. Someone else said that Im running to rich.

I dought its the HG cause in 2000 they changed the bolt desighn and lucky for me I have a 2000 SLS. What do you guys think???? Thanks all!!!!!

Have you had to add any coolant to the surge tank ?? It should be just about half full when hot, somewhat less when warm. Be careful not to pull the cap if the upper radiator hose is hard: there will be 18 psi in there......

If you're not losing coolant, it's not head gaskets.

Warm, engine off for 5 minutes, where exactly is the oil line on the dipstick? If it's much over halfway up the hashmark I'll bet the engine is burning off excess oil.

Water in the combustion chamber causes steam and (when cold) wet tailpipe tips.. Oil, depending on the amount, can be anything from white to medium blue and causes oily tips. Gasoline, as in rich mixture, tends toward black (think diesel truck) and causes black, fluffy deposits in the tips. (A rich mixture will also overheat the cat). Carbon and WOT rich mixtures tend toward light brown, and cause a light, dry ash in the tips.

:stirpot: Yes, I'll buy white smoke from burning a fair amount of coolant, but if he isn't losing coolant ???? .....and the condensate steam on a cool morning is a normal byproduct of burning petroleum, and will continue until the exhaust warms up.

Have you been loosing coolant? If you havent then you cant be burning it out the pipes now can ya?

White can also be unburnt fuel from an extremely rich mixture. Could be a ruptured FPR diaphragm or stuck open injector. What does the "smoke" smell like?

I'm loosing coolant. had to put water in the tank to drive home. I'm babying her and only going to 2,000 rpm. So I guess I have a blown HG huh?

Now It's below the half way point. maybe the smoke has a tint of blue in it and my friends just retarded. gonna have it looked at on tuesday so I hope that the HG is fine and I'm just loosing oil and coolant. Thankyou ALL for you'r help. I've been stressed over this but all you'r help has calmed me down. I'll let you guys know what the deal is tuesday. Have a good one!!!!!!

if you have an oil leak THAT bad
youd of known before checking the stick
and thered be some nice size puddles and a very soaked undercarriage

ya, I just hate to say i blew a HG. I don't know, it just sucks and it s a big loss for me. I've been saving up for that car since I was a kid. To see her go out like that is just heart braking.

get a exhaust gas byproduct test done
it the only way to be 100% sure
then youll know where you stand

Also, stop filling the oil to the top of the hashmark. Only fill it to halfway up the mark. A Northstar will burn off that 1/2 quart in a heartbeat. It's 7 1/2 quarts to the middle of the mark.
