...but I have to say, many of the bangled bimmer designs have grown on me over time (well, not this particular one of course, it's still fugly as hell, but some of the others...).

You know what's funny? Bangle was the head of BMW design before the "Bangleized" designs came out.

I prefer the Merc myself. The C63 Jeremy was driving on Top Gear Monday night was a thing of beauty. Thank God the new V will dismantle it.

Ive liked the 7 series before AND after its redesign. I have nothing against the rest of the Bangle'd Bimmers. However, the 1 series is a different story... theres something about the rear quarters that makes it look reallllly bad.

Its a shame, despite its cleanliness the car looks out of proportion.

Indeed, then he ran out of ideas. When you've reached the peak of your career, you either retire or start producing garbage.

Just like all those '80s hair metal bands that are still putting out hair metal albums, twenty years after it's demise.

I think Bangle has gotten most of the 2 dr coupes right. But the sedans proportions are off.

The 1 series is just plain ugly. The lowered beltline that sags in the middle is one of the most horrible and stupid design features Ive ever seen. It screams fat pig.

That being said, Im NOT thinking like everyone else who thinks the new 1 series is a bad car. I think its one of the best cars BMW has put out in awhile.

Bangle was specifically told not to screw up the new 3 series design.

Yeah, the new 3-coupe is a damn fine looking car. The convertible, however, due to the hard folding top, has an oversized rear deck that looks out of place.

The new M3 is a direct response to the CTS V and a 4 door will be available soon.

Too bad the new V is about to stomp a mudhole in its ass.

I do like the Z8. A guy on Maui has one and it is a beautiful car.

I prefer the old school E38 7 series (94-01). I dont care for the current trend on the rounded corners and the 1 series is AWFUL and the 318ti is one of the ugliest cars ever put on public roads.

gary88
05-02-08, 11:55 AM
I don't think the 4 door M3 is really a response to the CTS-V. They had a 4 door E36 M3 way before the CTS was even around. Now rich soccer moms can drop all their kids off at school.

MauiV

The V8 is the response. Same price range as the V but over 100 less horse. M5 beater at an M3 price.

I think that the "new generation" (post 2000) redesigns of many European cars don't look as nice as their '90s counterparts. Take for example the 2002 7 Series versus the classic, timeless 1995-01 era (E38) style. Or the 2000-06 S Class versus the 1992-1999 style, or the 04+ XJ Jaguar versus the 1995-2003 style. I like the high, square lines and cold profile...it's very "european correct" to me. One of the cars that actually improved, aesthetically, after it's redesign was the A8. That thing was subtly gorgeous before, but breathtaking now.

I don't really care for the new look (i.e. Bangle butt) that's the trend nowadays. It works on some cars (W221 S Class, 3 Series Coupe, 6 Series) but overall, I just think it looks confusing and it doesn't follow a clean pattern.

Bangle designs look like someone built a clay model of a good looking car, then left it out in the sun to melt and droop.

A friend of mine has an M6, and Motor Trend's comment "Who backed this thing into a guardrail?" is so accurate it's amazing. What happened to the back of that car is a disaster.

Beautiful!

What are the model designations on the last gen 6 and 8 series, like the ones pictured?

I almost purchased an incredibly cheap 635csi a few years ago. But in the 2 days it toook for me to find out enough info on it, to see if it was a 'too good to be true' deal, another buyer snatched it up. Turns out I turned down an incredible deal too...

E38 7 series...

Yes.

E39 5 series...

Yes.

E36 3 series...

Ew. No.
Worst 3 series design to date in my opinion and has the reputation of being the Civic of BMWs.

I may be the teeniest bit biased, but BMW peaked with the e30. It was the perfect blend of the old style and modern features.

I like the E36. Without its clean and angular shape, we wouldnt have the beautiful E46 that was inspired by it. I got yet another compliment yesterday on the 04 325 convertible, again from a guy.

Yeah, this silver convertible seems to really draw the eyes of men...

All E30's were not created equal. Regular E30's were horribly slow, and weren't anything special without mods. E30 M3's were such a huge improvement over the non-M's. I wish I had never sold mine. E36's were such a better machine tho, if you were looking for a driving machine. That added power and still manageable weight made them much more well rounded then the E30. Im looking for an 94 M3 now, 286 hp of 6cyl pre-double vanos goodness. :)
