: People seriously need to learn about Snopes

I get so many emails forwarded to me from outraged family members and friends with hysterical rumors, and it amazes me that no one bothers to even check Snopes to see if there's a shred of truth to them.

"UK stops teaching Holocaust!!!"

"Life is beautiful virus!!!"

"Pelosi supports retirement tax!!!"

"Marine comes home from Iraq to foreclosure!!!"

Some of these stupid emails even say at the bottom "This has been verified by Snopes!", even though I look it up myself and it's obviously false. What is it about these hysterical rumor emails that makes people forward them to hundreds of friends without even fact checking them?

Amen! I keep responding to people with links to Snopes. The same people keep sending crap and I keep responding with references. Do you think they would take the effort to check first? It's just inconsiderate, once you know there are ways to validate a message to keep doing it :thepan:
You can even subscribe to their newsletter with the latest information regarding what's in circulation. How hard can that be???

Preach brother preach! My mom sends me weird forwards all the time (even though I tell her to not because some may have viruses and spyware in them). My dad has sometimes joined my mom on the boat until I call them to say check snopes... :gah:

Couldn't agree more. Even though Snopes doesn't alway come through with a definitive answer, more times than not, they have the "scoop on the poop".

I typically delete anything that says FW: at the beginning. Problem is I have deleted some legit messages that way.

Snopes? I really need to google more.

Where is Urb? Googling is most fun when done with Urb.

Really? It's a site that investigates urban legends and circulating email stories. The site is pretty poorly laid out for casual browsing, but their search function works well.

Check out what they have to say about the ridiculous "gas strike" (http://www.snopes.com/politics/gasoline/gasout.asp) idea.

Snopes should be part of every Email 101 class. Then all we would have to deal with is the deliberate spam.

Most of the emails could be filtered out if people just used their brains. The "Bill Gates will give you $100 for forwarding, email tracking system" got old years ago but people still forward it on. Typically it's the same people on my emailing list that forward the same junk. They never learn.

Here's my stock reply to these emails. BEWARE it contains profanity:

If I thought there was even a prayer of getting laid by a supermodel I would forward that 1000's of times every day.

I know of snopes, I think it is blocked from work.
I never go there unless something really catches my attention that isn't obviously a retarded scam.
(few and far between)

I have one friend that forwards me worthless crap all the time, and another that sends me worthless crap that is really funny.
He sent me one that had some hilarious pictures of folks using cars for stuff they weren't intended for at all.
That one was awesome.

The best forward I ever got was around the time of the World Cup; lots of sexy naked ladies body painted to look like soccer uniforms. Yummy indeed.
