Top retailer Wal-Mart's Sam's Club unit said Wednesday it is limiting the amount of rice individual shoppers could buy at one time, as rice prices hit new records around the world.

Sam's Club said it had temporarily placed limits of four 20-pound (nine-kilogram) bags a person for jasmine, basmati, and other long-grain white rice types.

"We currently have plenty of rice for Sam's Club Members," the company said in a statement.

"However, like our competitors, we're just taking the precautionary step of limiting sales of the very large 20 pound bags" of imported white rice, it said.

I put rice in everything. EVERYTHING! :( I'll just go to the Global Foods store and stock up.

hmmm, only times I eat rice are when I go for Mexican food, or Chinese food.

Last time I had plain white stickey rice.... the Thai place, came with the Pad Thai... which is the only type of Thai food I've had (on many occasions)

I did try to make fried rice with a bunch of stuff in it one time, came out good actually but too much seasoning.

That reminds me, I want to make a chicken and rice meal in the crockpot....

Actually I do have rice on hand, the little bags of instant rice you boil.... they are handy :)

My daughter works for Sam's Club. She also said that they are thinking about rationing flour, too. Pretty soon we'll all have our government issued ration coupons

As long as the don't ration gasoline, Baconators and mongolian barbecues, I think I'll be OK.

I have already purchased several pallets of Riceland rice before this shortage. I will wait until the shortage has reached epic proportions and sell my rice 1/2 pound at a time on Ebay. I will be filthy rich....HAHAHahahah.

It seems to me that I read in emementary school that you can starve on white rice so it's a waste of money anyway unless you want rickets.

In the US our shortages are mostly the result hoarding brought on by media induced panic and speculation.

Hawaiians are gonna go apeshit.

You get sticky white rice with the big breakfast at McDonalds there.

When the Longshoreman go on strike there is a immediate rum n TP and rice on the Islands.

Glad I dont eat the stuff unless its fried or Spanish.

I call BS... I refuse to believe Jesda would feign health consciousness - rice doesn't taste like Bacon... unless of course it's prepared in bacon grease, then I might believe it.

Either way... I can somehow understand a rice shortage, but there's zero reason there should ever be a flour shortage in this country. If it were to get to that point, then that's the day we better stop being the "breadbasket" of the world by exporting half of our wheat to foreign markets. I've got nothing against anyone else... but we have enough things to worry about on the homefront and feeding ourselves should never be one of them.

Been there, done that. :) Bacon isn't that bad for you until you add it to burgers and steaks or have more than a couple thin strips at a time. Two slices and a cup of rice is a good way to start a morning.

for you it might be just a slight raise in price. For others in poorer countries it means they have to do with half of the food which was already scarse... :(

I have bags of rice in my cupboard that are older than my son.
I am not overly worried about it.
I also have a Costco membership so anytime I need a 15 year supply of rice I'll go up there and buy a bag.

Just lop the head off the guy standing next to you with a machete and you'll have plenty. Tried and true.

There have been some Chinese agricultural officials in the Fairbanks area looking to buy seed potatoes. There is no history of there ever being any potato blight around here and yields are huge. Maybe they're looking for a crop that will more efficiently employ their land.
