View Full Version : Want to see the future of GPS? greyghost04 04-18-08, 08:18 PM Dash Exspress is already being sold. Go to the URL and view BOTH videos. It blows my mind to see what we will probably have in another year. I'd love to have this built in to my CTS now. We have a GREAT nav now. This is the next generation.

RustedElvis 04-19-08, 12:26 PM Pretty cool features but I thought one of the features was "funny". Interact with your device and other Dash users on my.dash.net Must be some kind of IM or something. Great idea while driving :bulging: bryson17 04-19-08, 01:16 PM that's the way nav is going. I bet garmin, tomtom, and all the others have stuff like that in the pipeline. Southern 04-19-08, 02:06 PM There are some excellent features here. I'm still disappointed (one of several disappointments with our very expensive NAV) that our NAV can't be updated whereby I could add POIs. Here, POIs would be updated automatically. The traffic feature should only improve.....
OTOH I didn't see any list of features like various voices, scenic routes, voice recognition (obviously not included), spoken street names, etc........ ngiardina 04-19-08, 04:01 PM With the UAV nav, aren't we just waiting for someone to hack it and start running Windows on it? Then we could have the best of both worlds, OE integration and Internet-connected loveliness. NJRonbo 04-19-08, 04:28 PM I need to buy a GPS unit for when I rent vehicles during travel as
well as when I use the company car.
I could have bought the DASH today but because of the negative
reviews I think that I am going to save money and go with a trusted
Garmin unit.
Too many potshots at the bulky size of the unit and the slow times
it takes to power on calculate routes.
What I do agree with is the fact that this is the future of GPS and
we will probably see similar units integrated into vehicles in the
not-too-distant future. ngiardina 04-19-08, 04:32 PM I need to buy a GPS unit for when I rent vehicles during travel as

Yep, and they wil be available at your local wireless provider for $10, with a two-year service contract at $50/mo. greyghost04 04-19-08, 07:29 PM I think that reason you see all these sale prices on all the Garmins, TomTom, ect, is they are selling out all of this generations' production run. I bet in 6 months we start to see features in their gps's just like the Dash. Dr Chill 04-19-08, 11:53 PM Is this really worth $13/month (probably $16 a month after taxes and fees)? greyghost04 04-20-08, 12:39 AM Depends on how much you drive and where. thebigjimsho 04-20-08, 03:11 AM Is this really worth $13/month (probably $16 a month after taxes and fees)? To anyone who needs to drive anywhere for work? Yes. Mike_TX 04-20-08, 11:40 AM The argument is that the subscription price works out to about the same cost as upgrading the maps every year on a conventional Nav, and the benefit is that the maps are upgraded constantly.
But what's not clear to me is who supplies the map database in the first place. I'm assuming since it's internet-based that it's Yahoo Maps or Google, etc. (?) So, what about the routing logic?
You have to admit the reviews weren't all golden ... the unit stubbornly prefers main roads, is slow on startup and re-calc, and lacks a number of features found in competitive units. On top of that, it requires a bunch of other users in your area for the traffic flow thingy to be believable. And BTW - I didn't see where it shows actual traffic accidents and construction ... just flow data.:hmm:
Internet - or satellite - connectivity is definitely in the works for future Navs, and some of that is beginning to trickle into them already. But this particular loaf of bread needs a little more time in the oven AFAIC.
