Has anyone heard that there is a GM accessory back-up camera available for the '08 CTS? When I was at the Dry Cleaners, I came out to some guy looking at my car, (he drove a new Yukon Denali) and he said, "Nice car--are you going to get the back-up camera?" I said it doesn't have one, and he said it was available as a GM accessory? He probably did not know what he was talking about, but I thought I would ask if anyone heard anything about this.

When I was searching a few web-sites for such an accessory, I also noticed these chromed center caps:

http://gmaccessoriesstore.com/polished-center-with-logo-wheels-sold-p-5140.html?cPath=388_549_550

Did anybody get them? Does anybody have a picture of wheels with them installed?

You probably could go to Best Buy and get a backup camera cheaper IDK

I think those chrome center caps look cool...but only on the wheels they're made for, the chrome ones. They do have polished wheel center caps though.

Costco has a wireless kit (including monitor and camera) for around $70.

I don't know about Best Buy, but most auto electronics shops sell and install backup cameras. Or you can bey the stuff off eBay and do it yourself.

You can buy tons of backup cameras...... but how many of them display on the CTS screen?

Not one. Nobody has yet to figure out how to get an Aux Video In to the HU. Who really wants some "tacked on" external display for their backup camera? Not me. OE integration is the name of the game.

I agree--I would only want it if it could be integrated into our pop-up Nav screen, but this is still a great car! I was asking because this guy claimed to have seen it at a multi-brand GM dealership.

Is it for certain that the 09 will have the back up camera?

So you guys are saying a good electronics shop can't splice into the display with a switched video input? They do it all the time with DVD-based units, so I figured someone has figured out how to tap into the display for this car (?)

On those cars where it's easy to access the video feed from the DVD unit, for example, it's just a matter of a Y-connector and relay attached to the backup light circuit that switches input from Nav to backup cam. Then it reverts to Nav display feed when you put the car in Drive.

But I have no experience with the CTS. :hmm:

If anyone finds one that will interface with out nav system, please let us know. I know that I sure would be interested!

I am pretty sure that the GM lock-pick by coastaletech has something for the CTS, doesn't it?

It isn't that you can't splice to the display, it is that the head unit speakes to the display over GVIF (Gigabit Video Interface, proprietary to Sony) and a converter from GVIF to VGA or composite costs about $1200. Not really worth it for a backup camera.

Other than an advertisement for your company, what are you saying?
Are you saying that the connectors have been found? Are you saying that you can supply the unit for $450? Or are you saying what is in the post, that is, I don't have it, but if I did , it would be cheaper than $1200?

Shoot, if i didn't have one, I would sell it to you for 19.95............

^ very funny, I am LOL
but let me tell you this. before you even test drove your beautifull CTS, I already new what was coming and in the beginning of 2007 I started doing some research and also following several threads on Toyota Lexus and Range Rover forums, because those systems also have GVIF format. and I've been doing testing since last year. but for several reason I was quite about it.
spend some time and check link below ( and make sure to look at the dates those posts were made)
http://priuschat.com/forums/prius-modifications/26503-2006-prius-mfd-gvif-video-input.html
now, when I made a coment about it, no one seems to care. but anyway, I contacted one of the manufacturer in Korea and right now they are developing a prototype for CTS, based on the one that they currently have for other vehicles with GVIF format

I was riding in a co-worker's brand new '09 Nissan Murano and it has the back-up camera. I was like, "Oh, cool! Wish the CTS has it." Nonchalantly she deadpanned, "It's probably because it doesn't need it...it's a smaller car; in this one, it's hard to see what's behind it."

I was like, "You know, I think you're right!" LOL :eyebrow:

Bottomline: it would've been nice, even highly desirable--but not essential. In other words, I will survive. :)

P.S. I don't have my CTS yet...waiting on the '09s.

You will survive, but the little kid playing behind your car may not. :thepan:

Seriously, once you use a backup cam, you feel blind when backing up in a car without one. On the rare occasion that I drive my wife's STS, I almost grit my teeth when I back up, even after looking over both shoulders and in the mirrors.

It really helps, and it's a definite safety device.

The vast majority of the millions of cars in this country do not have back-up cameras and many of them have not run over any little kids... Even one is atrocious, of course, so I see your point.

What I am saying is that since I don't have one and won't have one, apparently (since they're not available in the '09s), I'm not going to quit driving or something...this is a survivable "omission."

I guess I'll just do what I've always been doing:

- Never shoot backwards out of a parking spot like a bat out of you know where (creep...creep...creep out)
- Be aware of the whereabouts of people and creatures around me before I turn the key

Yes, safety feature...but so are the lane departure warning or adaptive cruise control systems. I can't have everything and there's always the old stand-by: use my eyes and ears (and mirrors!). :shhh:

I don't disagree - well, except maybe on lane departure warnings and adaptive cruise, both of which I've used and hate. :D

I'm just pointing out that a backup camera is a very desirable feature. Not absolutely necessary, but very useful. And like garage door openers and remote keyless entry, once you have it, you really miss it when it's not there.

Hmm... When You have it you don't know how convenient it is. Last 5 years I never thought I will miss it.

The Coupe & Sports Wagon will have the back-up camera as an option from the git go in 2010.
As far as I can tell the sedan won't get it till 2011.
