View Full Version : I need advice in buying a 05 CTS kimphamg 04-18-08, 01:46 AM I wanted to buy a CTS for a while now, and I have found one that i'm really interested in. Since I have next to zero knowledge in cars, (i'm a computer programmer), i have a few question to make sure i am not getting screwed. I'm am waiting a vin check from the cts-v thread.
CTS 05 sport package + deluxe package (17" tires, sport grill, Boss audio, etc) all black with light wood trimming on the wheel. The only thing that get on my nerve is the 50k miles on the speedometer.
1) The GM dealer is selling it for $23,000US (i'm in Canada but it's roughly the same). Do you think I can talk him down and for how much?
2) There is basically no more warranty on it except for 3months/5000KM (3100 Miles) , whichever come first. Is an extra warranty worth it?
3) The 50k miles on it really scare me, what could happen to the engine in a worst case scenario? (i'm a complete car newbie)
Thanks, and I can't wait to be a regular on this forum! :yup: bo3adsa 04-18-08, 05:47 AM I have the exact CTS that you want with almost the same odometer "51,000KM" (except it's Diamond White) and I can't be happier with it ….
I have no idea about how much it sells but 23000$ is kind of high since the new CTS is her…
BTW my dealer told me the major service for my car is @ 70K and its gana be kind of costly since they're going to replace a lot of stuff compared to the Oil and Filter they do every 10K ….
Of course you need to do your home work and make sure it has a clean history and the previous owner(s) was taking good care of the car… urbanski 04-18-08, 06:28 AM I wanted to buy a CTS for a while now, and I have found one that i'm really interested in. thanks for joining as a supporter :) I bought an 05 cts with luxury packages last november and the car had 98 000 km on the odometer. I called the previous owner and asked him a few questions before buying the car.
No I didn't pay for an extended warranty 'cuz in all my previous cars, they died at around 340 000 km in 4-5 years and I never used an extended warranty even if I had one. Right now, my car has 121 000 km on the odo and its still in great shape! Just ask for the inspection, test drive it the way you want it!
I paid mine 18000$ CAN. For the maintenance: maintenance almost problem free! And for the maintenance at 70k miles, I don't know whats expensive! Its just an air filter that need a change! The major maintenance is at 100k miles (fuel filter: 99$ CAN + tax for maintenance and parts) + spark plugs...
The most expensive things or maintenance that i've had to pay for my car was the exhaust tips (2) and tinted the windows :D :D :D
Next will be the spoiler or the sport grill :D Cartdawg 04-18-08, 09:33 AM I have an 05 that has 28,000 miles on it when I bought it. It didnt have the sport package or bose system. Had the 16" wheels....but WITH the caddy certification to 100k miles...I got it for right at 20k.
You should be able to talk that price down to the 17-18k range...AT LEAST!!! Mine has way less mileage than that and I paid less.... TotalEclipse31 04-18-08, 09:41 AM As far as talking him down on price, I might be able to help a little. I used to sell used cars. Unfortunatly there is no telling how much markup they really have on the car, but usually its about 10%. Just figure you should be able to get ATLEAST 5% off the price of the car. You can try to find the "Black Book" value of the car. Thats most likely what the dealership baught it for. Look at Fair value. Also be careful in financing (if you are financing). This is where they make a ton of money. Like here in maryland, they can legally hold 3 interest rate points. So go to your bank, credit unions are great, and SHOP THE RATE! Also remember that extended warranty prices ARE NEGOTIABLE! Hope this helps. Black4drCTS 04-18-08, 10:07 AM I would deffinalty get it certified thorugh GM if you can, im still pissed they didnt offer this wehn i bought my 04 back in aug. which i paid 22k for.. it only had 35k miles on it though. TotalEclipse31 04-18-08, 10:27 AM I have an 05 with 30,000 on it. Would I qualify to get it certified? How much would that cost me to do? ghettomike 04-18-08, 10:34 AM let me clairify...you are in canada and looking at a private dealer or a GM dealer? if its not a gm dealer run a car fax..smaller dealers will sell USA Branded accident vehicles which loose the branded title when they get registeded in canada but they still hold the brand on the GM database. price seems a little high, i just picked up a mint 03 with 110km for $13,700..yes a 05 is newer and it has less km but im sure if you look around you can find it cheaper. what dealership is it at? nickc50310 04-18-08, 10:59 AM That price is pretty high. You should be able to get one like that for around 18k or less USD. kimphamg 04-18-08, 02:10 PM Thanks for all the quick feedback! I guess the 50k miles on it isn't really an issue.
Just figure you should be able to get ATLEAST 5% off the price of the car.
Good to know i can talk him down, thanks!

It's already GM certified pre-owned so I guess that's good. It comes with 3 month warranty or 5000 KM.

GM dealer in Montreal! (Clermont)
thanks for joining as a supporter
No problem! It's worth it just for the VIN Check ;)
That price is pretty high. You should be able to get one like that for around 18k or less USD.
I know, i will try to negociate the price on it, otherwise i will wait for another one to show up! jamesodom 04-18-08, 03:23 PM 04 CTS, 45,000 miles, sport package, extended warranty, just paid $17,500 about two months ago in Houston, TX. chris1020 04-18-08, 06:25 PM i have an 06, and have already had to replace the front brakes and rotors, antenna,CD/NAV unit twice, Recall on differential seal, and power steering pump. The 4 year 40,00 mile warranty suck but at least it has covered all of these issues. Other than that I love this car ghettomike 04-19-08, 10:07 AM you gotta watch the USA cars ... there are a lot commin into canada, especially montreal area, they have a different system for vin checking, apparently accidents are not usually recorded to the vin...check that car over really good or you could end up buying a wreck that has been repaired.. | |
