View Full Version : Couple of NAVIGATION questions

I've done a search, and even broke the manhood law and RTFM (read the manual). I can't believe this, but...

Is there a way to have the navigation map on without the audio system on? I've tried everything and can't figure it out. The only option seems to be to turn the volume all the way down. This seems hard to believe.

Second, with the Nav map turned on, if I get on the freeway (which I do virtually every day I drive it), half the screen comes up with the next three exits. Great option for when it's needed, but I almost never need it. So every time I get on a freeway, I have to push the on-screen button to make it go away. I can't find an option to make it not do that by default. Anyone know if it can be turned off?

Thanks

I was wondering the same thing about the nav being on without the radio.

I don't think there is a way to do this; I just hit the "mute" button on the steering wheel.

Thanks. I guess I'll have to figure out where the mute button is.

Only GM would make a system that you have to have the audio system on to use the nav. I thought the Corvettes were stupid. I've had an 05, and now and 08 with factory nav. I can get the nav to operate without the audio system on. But to turn the nav off, I have to turn the sound system back on, then off again. What drugs are these folks at GM on?

As far as a I know, most/all Nav systems are like this. The "radio" is just a computer that does everything. You can't just have part of the computer on. The whole system has to be on in order for part of it to work. So no, GM is not the only company to make a system like this.

About turning off the half of the screen with the next exits listed. Touch the rectangle in the lower, right corner of the screen. It turns the exits listing on and off.

Not correct. It's the only nav I've had that you cannot use the nav without the audio system being on at the same time. Like I said, the Corvette is wierd, but the nav can operate without the audio on. On the Corvette, you can turn the Nav on without the audio, you just can't turn it off without turning the audio on first.

I also just traded a M45 Infiniti that they operated independently, as does our new Mazda CX9.

I understand that - I want to know how to keep it from coming on every time. Unless I'm missing something, you can turn it off by pushing that button, but next time you turn the system on and get on a freeway it automatically does it again (shows the exists). What I'm wanting to do is change the default so it does not come on unless I want it to.

Alpine makes the Nav system, and Alpine's IWA-D505 head-unit, and all others, and Eclipse, and Pioneer, all have an audio off feature.

Ah, I stand corrected.

What is the problem with having the nav on and the sound muted? Why are you looking for a way to have the nav on and the radio off? It serves the purpose that you are trying to achieve by simply muting/turning down the volume. This isn't a stupid design by GM. They engineered it so that if you want nav without music playing you can achieve this by turning down the volume or hitting the mute button. Seems simple enough to me.

Okay, so it's simple enough. Why even put an on off control on the audio system at all then?

But for the sake of actually telling you why, how about the fact that I listen to discs or the HDD most of the time. While it's muted, it's likely still running, so when I un-mute it, I might be several songs down from where I was when I muted it.

There are workarounds for a lot of things, but that doesn't mean they are a good design. I still say it's an idiodic design.

I agree. Stupid design. That's why it isn't designed that way on all the other cars...........

I usually hit the pause button - it will supress audio from the radio / xm / cd / hdd and not supress voice commands.

I had not thought of that. Thanks!

Maybe the radio has to be on to use the nav because of the traffic feature integrated into the system. Since the traffic feature is a part of XM and XM is part of the radio, it makes sense to me that the radio has to be on to use the nav.

Interesting thought - I give you that. On the other hand, XM does not actually have to be on - you can be in another mode for nav-traffic to work. So it seems like they could make it to recieve the proper signal without the sound system being turned on.

or GPS? that requires a satellite receiver.
