View Full Version : Oh no, a tractor trailer backed into my CTS!

I'm a little bummed out to say the least. I pull off the interstate today, go thru the toll booths and come up behind a tractor trailer waiting to turn left at a traffic light. As I pull up behind him other vehicles come up behind me. Suddenly the driver of the trailer decides he is too far into the intersection and to accomodate another trucker trying to turn in front of him he decides to back up in front of me. I see what he is doing and lay on my horn as I tried to backup myself but a pickup truck was only a couple feet behind me.
That feeling of inevitability came over me as I saw the back of his trailer hit me square on in the front of my new CTS!
I jumped out and kicked his steel bumper with my foot when I saw that he had smashed in my grill.
His trailer was low enough that he thankfully did not come in contact with my hood but he creamed my caddy seal and pushed it inward. Several sections of the plastic grill broke too.
Anyway, I called the dealer's collision estimate dept when I got home and will be taking it in tommorrow for a look-see.
The driver admitted his mistake and the police report reflects he was at complete fault.
Justice was served because the troopers were giving his truck an anal probe when I left.
I can't imagine what a complete front grill replacement is going to cost his insurance company. But pay they will...

You were not injured, and that's the main thing.

If the driver of the truck bought the grill himself, he could get it on ebay for as little as $50 bucks but since it's up to the insurance. I'm going to guess anywhere from $200-500 in cost.

I'll let you know the estimate. I know I'm lucky of course, it could have been much worse. If the back of his trailer were a foot higher he would have gone up over the hood. I'm very thankful for that! I was pretty upset over it earlier but no one was hurt and the driver felt pretty bad about it.

Ok, replacement cost including labor a tad over $500. Actually I'm surprised it is this low. The adjuster was surprised as to how the emblem and grill absorbed the hit without doing any internal damage. Parts should be in about a week.
Lucky I am for sure.

The sun will rise in the East and set in the West and you'll be just fine

I bet you learned to leave more room in front when you stop behind somebody. I try to leave at least a car length or so after I got bit the same way years ago. Some lessons are learned the hard way. That's what it took for me.
